King Younk's Questions thread

In last place, score wise, but I have 2 cities with Great Generals, and will be able to start off with +5 XP Archers/Gunpowder Units henceforth. My research is finally moving along, on account of my large swaths of cottages - the peninsula I initially founded upon is easily defended due to the geographic layout.

I researched archery, but as Charlemagne with 2 GGs, it's really an easy way to defend your cities.

Someone criticize me. I researched Fishing too late in the game, but besides that, I think I'm moving along nicely. I am not sure what type of victory to go for though. Maybe some sort of conquest?

I would say from your current position, defense victory would probably be the best choice. People might say there is no such thing, but how can we really be sure if we never tried? Just keep on building those highly promoted archers (and those markets, so you have something worth defending) and have faith. Sooner or later that victory screen will eventually pop up and you'll be the first to discover it!

Lol, Imma focus on research now, and do a rush with cavalry.

I was behind in tech for a very long time, but caught up instantly as soon as I finally got a great scientist to bulb philosophy and trade it around.

Probably need to go to war against Hannibal at some point, but it shouldn't be too hard. Just slightly behind in land, GDP, and food demos at this point. Or I could just gift him a Christian city and win a cheesy religious victory, since I was able to win the AP resident election and he's the only one without Christianity.

Hmm, I'm not getting the option for a religious victory vote. Am I missing something? Eventually found the last leader, Isabella isolated on an island and got one of her cities to Christianity, so it should be possible. There's one other leader who died before I ever met her (Boudicca), and another leader who I killed (Monty). Does having dead leaders mess up the religious victory option? or do I just need to wait hundreds of turns on this ridiculous huge/marathon setting?

How well spread is the AP religion? Apparently you won't get the diplo victory option if one civ has over 75% of the AP votes, I kind of doubt it on a Huge map but maybe that's the problem?

It's reasonably well spread. It's been a long time since there was any vote at all so I don't know the exact numbers, but there are several other civs that have it in most of their cities (all friendly with me!) So I doubt I'm at 75%.

I think I found the problem. according to https://civilization.fandom.com/wiki/Apostolic_Palace_(Civ4)#Proposals

If a non-owning Resident ceases to be a Full Member (by converting to another state religion or to no state religion, or switching to Free Religion), no further proposals will be voted on until a new Resident is elected. However, the normal schedule of proposals is still followed, and if there would otherwise be possible votes there may be a long period of AP inactivity.
I briefly swapped out of Christiniaty during a golden age, just so I could get Isabella to like me enough to open borders. I think that means no more proposals at all, until there's another resident election. and those are every 50 turns on standard so.... 150 turns here? feels like forever. It's been at least 100 turns since then, with no votes coming up at all.

Yep, there we go... just had to keep hitting "next turn" a lot. finally got a new resident election, followed by the religious victory option. Could have won 200 turns ago if it wasn't for stupid Isabella being the way she is.

(I had enough of a lead I could have won other victories too, but I didn't feel like doing the micro for any other kind of victory option)

Alright, you know what? I'm going to post a few of my past wins, then I'm going to start a new game on Emperor on a Standard size map, because many of you are judging me while not playing on the same size map yourselves.

And to prove you's wrong - this is random everything on standard. I'm going to beat it, in order to prove that it's the map size that differentiates us - I, being a man, who plays on Huge maps on Marathon, and ye children who play on smaller maps.

Let the games begin!

I'm in a good spot - not great, but definitely winnable. And I didn't restart once, and put everything on random! Watch as I conquer the lot, starting with the Arabs. Will likely adopt Buddhism or Confucianism for tech trading purposes - maybe Christianity would be best.
