Knights

Riflemen/artillery works, but that's a whole era after knights could be available, and the process is slower.

Nevertheless, as a former infantryman I'm glad to see that someone appreciates the Queen of Battle.:)

Yes but c'mon, if you don't make cavalry or knights chances are you might get blown away, most likely in multiplayer. They'll be makin cavalry, and if they get it quick enough they could mow right on through your pikemen/musketmen. Your best attacking unit would be a longbowman and that sucks. For me, i gotta get chivalry if i'm near another civ. If i'm by my self, maybe i can see why you'd skip them.

Depends when you plan on fighting. I always build whatever mobile unit is available because through Cavalry they are upgradable (and if I bothered to mod, Cavalry would be upgradable to tank). I have won many wars with Knights and especially enjoy those history making touches like the time my knights took the Sistine Chapel and became the Knights of the Chapel. Todays Knights, tommorow's cavalry.

Knights are always needed when playing warmonger. It keeps your attacks fresh and strong as you move through the ages. I generally find it hard to win with swordsmen so I opt for a combination of the two (swordsmen + horsemen with spearmen for city defenders). Towards the end of the ancient era I shift production to horsemen getting close to 30 of them before Chivalry comes and I upgrade them to knights (Great Library gives me that). I can generally take out 1-2 civs with knights and the upgrade to cavalries just assures me a huge advantage over the remaining civs. (Warmonger yeah!)

Yeah but what if you have leo's workshop? It is a lot less... oh yeah, upgrading to what? knights or cavalry?

Yeah, I realize about the artillery...
But for me, saying that you need artilleries to actually kill infantry w/cavalry, is obvious...
I'm saying WITHOUT artilleries, one vs. one...

Upgrading 30 horsemen costs 2400 gold. You must be rich.

2400 is not alot but there are many more things you can spend your money on than upgrading horsemen.

Set science to 0% and you'll make lots of money for upgrading (if you have alot of cities). Works best in combination with the Great Library, where you are likely to have science at 0% anyways. After you leave a civ with 1 city sign peace for any techs you don't have.

Later in the game 2400 is not so much, but in the early game it's a lot. If you have that much sitting around when you hit Chivalry then you're not using your money very well.

That depends Allemand. If you have built the great library, you can have your science set to 0% and cash in at least 50-100 gold per turn while the AIs do all the research. If the research is a bit slow, then you will have built all corthouses, cathedrals etc. already, so there's not that much to use your money for.

I normally do this (playing on monarch), and regularly rush a building now and then, but still end up with 4000-5000 gold when the great library becomes obsolete.

Me too.:) Except that I rarely build the Great Library (just don't have the resource for that kind of project). Most of the time, I would help my closest neighbor to build it so I can borrow it for 1 turn.:) In the mean time, I just save all my golds for the rainy day.

Cavalry vs Mech Infantry!

I thought that would be suicide, but now that I look at it, it really isn't that bad if the mech has 1 HP.

Worst case scenario: Mech Infantry fortified in a metropolis built on a hill and your cavalry is attacking across a river. If the Mech infantry only has 1 HP, you still have a 34.4% chance of winning! (0.3% chance if it is a fully healed Veteran mech infantry)

If the mech Infantry is just fortified out in the open (or a town), you have a 58.6% chance of winning. (3.3% if MI is a fully healed Vet)

Fortified in a city on anything but hills: 48.5%, 65.3% if mech infantry is unfortified.

Thanks for backing me up while I'm gone.:) According to your calculation, the chance for the cavalry against the MechInf is actually a lot better than what I originally thought.

Which just goes to show that well-motivated troops will sometimes prevail against demoralized, ill-equipped, poorly trained troops, regardless of any technological advantage.

Welcome back, Moonsinger!

Knights vs. Cavalry very much depends on the combination of tech lead and proximity of opponents.

If the nearest geographical opponents are not very likely to develop or get Feudalism (Pikeman) it is worth to sidestep and develop chivalry and take them out at speed. Forget about supporting units, 2 movement points solve almost every situation. If the nearest geo opponents are near or beyond Feudalism it is best to just skip knights and go straight for Cavalry.

And other factor sometimes is the availability of Iron and / or Horses for opponents :) .

Wether or not to upgrade, I always do it and in both cases even pre-build Horsemen by masses and make sure there are enough Marketplaces around. Unless the GL is real effective I never save in advance and just put the tech slider to 0% once I am there. Within a small couple of turns a large army of Knights / Cavalry is ready to go, maxing out on the effects of speed and surprise.
