Here's hoping someone who's got the new dlc can fill us in on the specifics of the Scholars of te Jade Hall.

Specifically, the bonus from science buildings in the capital.

Thanks in advance!

I just finished a game and when I built the GL in my capital, I got a very small boost (maybe like 4 turns teching to IW). ANY other wonder I built (and I built a lot, I was wonderwhoring) I did not receive any bonus. I did not look at scientific buildings, but teching was very fast. On emperor I was had the most science per turn pretty much the entire game. Didnt really use RAs.
When I finished Freedom my academies were +18SPT. The normal academy is 6, add 2 from the UA, and add 2 from Scientific Theory. The Freedom policy tree says it doubles it, but I guess the UA is not added with it.

So it seems like you get some beakers each time you build a science building, i wonder if it's fixed or if it's like the ra's where its based on tech level

Also interesting that the freedom finisher doesn't apply to the ua beakers, I bet it's a bug.

I tested Korea's UA by buying a library in the capital. I saw a slight increase in science but I'm wondering if the science building must be built in the capital to get the science boost.

Yes, that's what the UA text says.

Would be cool if you or someone else could investigate in more detail by checking how much science you have towards a tech before and after, and preferably testing out with various science buildings and wonders, so we can see what exactly the boost is based on.

My first impression is that its exactly the same bonus you get as you would from completing an RA. IOW you get half the median tech cost at the time you build the building. For the GL you get this bonus twice (from the GL and the library).

You only get the bonus from scientific wonders - not all wonders. In case that wasn't clear in the description.

EDIT: I'm sure it increases and I'm pretty sure it works like RAs as when I got built a university I got the proper median RA value again. One thing I do not know is if this RA like effect is boosted by the RA modifiers (like PT and Rationalism opener). I doubt it... but... you never know :).

Oh, that wasn't clear to me at all, thought it meant scientific normal building or any wonder. I guess that limits how many of these boosts you can get through the game (since it's only in your capital), so it doesn't sound unreasonable that it would be on the level of a RA.

But that also begs the question of whether the Porcelain Tower and that Rationalism policy affects the boost. And I'm also curious what exactly counts as a scientific wonder. Any wonder that gives GS points (like The Oracle), or just the ones that give obvious and direct bonuses to science (like The Great Library)? I think those questions make a huge difference for how powerful the ability really is.

Okay as a followup I just ran a test.

I just got education and had 5 techs open to research. The median value of these 5 techs was 165:c5science:. I selected to research currency and due to overflows and such I had 46:c5science: into it already. I bought the university in the capital and instantly my research jumped to 129:c5science: into currency. So it gave me exactly 0.5 * median, as an RA would.

I don't know the full list but is is NOT all the ones that gave GS points. Both the oracle and the PT, for example, provide no boost. I don't have a complete list as I wasn't paying that much attention but from what I recall the following buildings / wonders provide this boost:

Library,
GL,
NC,
University
Oxford

I would presume that all future science buildings do too. So observatory, research lab, public school, etc. It seems the wonders are a toss up. I'd be guessing very few of them provide this boost, though, based on my early observations.

just need to get up to 75 hammers to get a library / turn in the capital =0

yeah I wondered about that too. If selling / rebuilding really does work that could be insane and obviously in desperate need of a patch.

I will test it right now :)

Korea sounds like a micromanager's wet dream

Yep vexing is right. I just sold the library in the capital and rush bought it back. My research jumped when I did it... yay for exploits?

Looks like you summed them all up. If Porcelain Tower is out, I don't think there's any world wonder except GL that fits the bill. Which means 7 free RAs per game (8 if you get a mountain start).

Will be interesting to see what slingshots people come up with for the GL, since you'll be getting 2 free RAs in addition to the free tech.

Sigh, I wish it worked as the tooltip says. I tried a production/wonder focused game, only to see my science not budge as I completed wonders.

That Library exploit looks very predictable - I'm surprised they didn't catch that.

I suppose the Library exploit wouldn't be viable until late game. 400 :c5gold: for a free RA is a foolish waste of money in the early game. But yeah, they should close it. Or just don't be cheesy and use it :)

That Library exploit is kind of lame, but just...dont use it. Thats the thing with obvious exploits. You can just decide NOT to use them, you are playing against an AI anyway.
And the boost only works for scientific wonders? I wonder if it works for Brandenburg Gate (2 scientist points). It did NOT work for me for Porcelain Tower or the Oracle, only the GL.

So what you're saying is that I get a free RA every time I build the buildings that I'm going to build in the early game anyway?

Yeah, that's broken. Babylon is going to get more raw :c5science:, but Korea is going to realize their :c5science: boost faster.
