I swear I'm starting to think it's just a glitch/bug.. or poor design.

I mean seriously.. Krakatoa, while very powerful, spawns most of the time away from any possible land, meaning it is pretty useless. This game, it spawned in the middle of OCEAN.. no land in 3 tiles.

I mean c'mon. there's few times I have ever seen that NW spawned anywhere close to a livable hex of land to build it in.. It's ridicolous!

It's mostly a sightseeing wonder. Same can be said for the Rock and Barrier Reefs, really.

But the Rock spawns in reachable era, so unless you placed your cities wrong, you can still gain the benefits of it. I'm not sure for Barrier Reefs, I think they spawn close enough to get worked.

I have had games where both of them spawned so far off into the ocean, and Krakatoa was nicely placed along my coastline...

Karkota is indeed the natural wonder most likely to be in a tile it can't be worked as its always a one tile landmass.

The Rock is normally somewhat easier to work.

Deep Sea Reef even easier.

But in a given game, placement of city states can often result in them being impossible to work because city states in offending locations are not allowed to be razed.

The Rock always spawns next to a mountain, and the mountain often is attached to another bit of land where you could build a city. Krakatoa and the Great Barrier Reef spawn by definition at least one tiles away from land, although I think I have alomost always seen the GBR within reach of a landmass, although not always both tiles within reach of the same landmass.

I once saw Krakatoa spawn next to a nearby tiny island I was understandably shocked because its within working range for once.

Well after I explored far and wide with an caravel xD

Well...it's useful for Spain. If they beeline Astronomy (which they pretty much always should) then you'll be the first one to see it and you'll get a free settler. :)

~R~

How does one get a Free Settler o.O? :| I'm talking about vanilla game, Astronomy doesn't provide a free settler for the first person to research it (kinda miss those bonuses from Civ 4)

it's not too bad. If you really want the extra science you can go for it.

I've got The Great Barrier Reef in my borders before.

You're completely missing the point.. you CAN'T get the extra science because it always spawns WAY too far away to be worked.

I find it to be close to small islands which are barely suitable for a city.

Same here for multiple times, the Great Barrier Reef is usually in reachable area (or close to a tiny island in the middle of the ocean, making it less useful). It is extremely recommendable to get that one inside your borders, your city will boom like crazy.

And I totally agree about the Krakatoa, I've never seen it anywhere nearby the coastline. Usually I find it in the middle of the ocean, without any island nearby.

The game should push some kind of algorithm that makes sure that they are within 3 tiles of a buildable tile.

I rarely see Great Barrier Reef in a place it can be settled, but that's because it's usually already claimed by a city-state. I think I remember hearing that there's something in the map scripts that tends to have CSes nearby natural wonders. But GBR, in my experience, is pretty much always in a spot it can be settled. I don't think I've ever seen it spawn with at least one, possibly both of the tiles just once tile off the shore, and the furthest tile two hexes away from the shore. Meaning a city build on the coast should be able to claim both.
