Civivor? - Mere riff-raff!

I suppose they can always dream.

No point in being bitter, you can always join in the next round... should only be another 12 months or so. :)

Slashdot is the mother-of-all-BBSes and uses a karma/metamoderation system, but I don't see the point of it for an already-well-moderated place like CFC.

That would go against the rules about poster-specific posts.
So do birthday threads, and congradulation threads for new mods. The fact is that there are hundreds of completely accepted poster-specefic threads and posts and to use that as the forbidding reason seems more like an excuse rather than an actual reason.

I would hate to think that I have been breaking the rules every time I posted a birthday poem.

Birthday threads are tolerated - and only for OT forum regulars. We also tolerate the 'what song are you listening to?' spamfest.

Wouldn't worry me if they were both banned, although the birthday threads do add to the sense of community. The distinction between them and other user-specific threads is that they are in no way a discussion of the person.

That, and threads that celebrate a wedding or newborn...also add to the community...

I always tended to think user-specific meant more of the "hey, I'm so and so, I'm so great...or someone else posting...hey, so and so is such an idiot" ect...

Common sense overrides user-specific thread intolerance. ;) :)

I've seen a fair amount of discussion about the person in birthday threads and will engage in the activity if I have something positive to say. The members photo and alternative member's photo are also wonderful threads where user-discussion occurs.

I think the current paradigm is that user discussion is tolerated under tightly controlled conditions, a Kudos thread/system could easily be made tightly controlled enough to ensure proper operation. I think such compliments would do much in building community.
