I have owned a laptop for around a year and have never had a problem with it until now!

When I turn the laptop on it goes through the BIOS check ok and Windows XP seems to start up ok. But once it gets to the welcome screen (the one where you select a profile to log on with) the laptop just freezes. The keyboard has no effect, the onscreen cursor will not move and absolutly nothing happens.

I have started the machine in safe mode which does work and will let me into windows. I have also tried using system restore to roll back to a couple of weeks ago, but this has had no effect as the laptop still freezes at the welcome screen.

I have not downloaded any dodgy programmes lately either! I can get into Windows properly if I use safe mode. I ran msconfig while in safe mode and restarted using "diagnostic startup" which starts Windows using basic devices and services only. And that worked, but selecting "normal startup" means I get the same problem as before.

Luckily I still have my old PC (which I am using to type this!) but would much rather use my laptop!! Any help or advice would be great.

If the problem is at the welcome screen where you select a profile, you could try entering the control panel while in safe mode and change the login type to the classic style where you manually type your username and password.
