It probably would be most prudent to put a bit more effort into handwriting

By itself, that is a very good point.

If you can't read your own handwriting, for all practical purposes you cannot write, since other people certainly won't be able to read your scratch.

Practice handwriting. Get one of those workbooks for elementary school children. Seriously.

That's easier said than done as I know from experience. The only people who can read my writing are me and any teacher I have had for over a year.
