Hi guys,
What's the latest with the GameRanger/C3C problems? Have they been resolved? I still haven't managed to have a multiplayer game of C3C yet and I'd really like to.

I got an email from Aspyr the other day saying that a C3C patch might be ready by the time I read that email but I assume it's not out yet unless anyone knows otherwise?

Scott fixed those a week or two ago.

The upcoming C3C patch is a separate ball of wax which will, incidentally, not allow for network games with the version that shipped. Once the patch comes out, you'll have to make sure everyone in your game is using the same version - new or old.

Sooo ... Has anyone got GameRanger Civ3 play to work yet? I now have a new router, with some new and interesting features like uPnP (isn't that just a M$ thing?) and triggers. So if anyone's interested in doing more experiments, just say the word.

What's the latest word on this patch? Any closer to seeing daylight?

Thanks

I'm not sure. I handed off a build a while back that was supposed to see the light of day. Haven't heard much beyond that (and haven't had time to ask, honestly).

While I'm now waiting for the Universal patch (I'm trying to keep my new MacBook free of PowerPC-only software!), I was just curious if you managed to get any network games going Alan? Once the patch come out, I'll be giving it another go as it looks like C3C will be my Civ of choice for a while now ;) (Although I'm still very slightly optimistic about Civ4 after the various user reports of Windows Civ4 working on a Bootcamped MacBook...)

Nope! I've occasionally logged into GameRanger, but I've never seen another Civ3 game set up or in progress. I once set one up myself and left it running to invite testers, but no one showed up, and it was closed by the moderators after I went to bed. So I have no idea whether it works or not, but I can say no one seems to be using it.

My brother and I (he is in Oregon and I'm in Maine) have played C3C over Gameranger numerous times in the past weeks. It can be a little quirky.
We've had to make sure that port 10233 was open on our routers and our firewalls. Also, when I host I give my brother my current IP address (which you can find by going to a site like http://www.lawrencegoetz.com/programs/ipinfo/).
Most of the time it works, sometimes we have to retry several times for it to succeed. Also, after he joins the prelaunch room in C3C it can take several minutes of complete unresponsiveness while my computer sends his the game save or scenario.
I have never tried with more than two players (myself and my brother) so I don't know how much more laggy that would be, but we're both on DSL and we find even turn-based to be laggy, simultaneous was very near unplayable.

I'm sorry to say it but it really does sound like multiplayer C3C is just plain poor. I'm quite disappointed. And I know there are issues in multiplayer games with routers and firewalls etc but a lot of us with problems seem to know what we're doing. It just seems a little too unreliable. I might even give FreeCiv another go but I'm getting tired of beta-testing different multiplayer Civ games.

I don't believe there are any known issues in the current Mac C3C release that would make this flaky. You do need to make sure you're using the latest GameRanger (it'll auto-update) as that fixes a firewall problem with C3C. Are you still having troubles?

@ChiefSparkY: I'm happy to give it a try again if you want to schedule a test session? You'd better say when, as you seem to be more elusive than me :p.

Now that it seems Civ 4 is shipping or just about to ship, I think I'll give up on C3C. It's been disappointing to be honest due to the multiplayer problems so I feel a little burnt. I'm hoping Civ 4 will get a little more love from Aspyr.

I have a MacBook but I'm fairly confident Civ 4 will run okay now, due to various reports on the web, including MacWorld.

See you on the Civ 4 side of things!

No problem. I'm only interested in the technical asspects of it. I don't think I have time or energy to put into learning a whole new way of playing Civ3 against human opponents. Best of luck with Civ4.

I've just now re-read through this thread, and I'm still not sure I know what problems you are seeing. Can you be specific as to what you are trying?

(I posted something similar a month ago - I think in FAQ. This site is a bit confusing to find things and navigate..)
Anyway

Finally got Civ III Complete and tried a Multiplayer game at a fellow fanatic's home via his home Airport network. We figured out how to get up a game with us 2 and 6 computer oponents. It was a bit quirky in speed, but fun.

The problem was when saving the game to go eat dinner we couldn't restart it as a multi-player game! We had tried saving on both machines. Each saved version of the game, when restarted, worked as a single-machine game - I believe it was as a single player game, with the player (country) who had played that machine being the 'active' (human) player.

We'd like to move on to play on the 'net but have to solve this first. Is there something we're doing wrong? It would be impossible to play a 'large' or 'huge' world game in one sitting!

thanks

As you only have three posts on CivFanatics it's very easy to find your ptrevious posts - just click on your name in the left hand column next to your latest post and select "Find more posts by landlox". Or if you can't even find your latest post to use for this, select Search at the top of any page and enter your user name to search for your posts.

Well the problem with that is I don't want to JUST find MY postings. I want to find stuff already posted related to whatever topic.
Oh well, I'll figure it out - I think

I was responding to the specific complaint that you couldn't find out where you had posted before.

For general searches there's a 'Google Search' option for the whole site at the top of the page, and there's also a more specific set of search options under the 'Search' button. These both work pretty well in my experience.
