I've just being reading through the series of designer notes for Old World by Soren Johnson (also of course the lead designer of Civ 4). Most of them are linked on the side panel of his website (https://www.designer-notes.com/). I find them very insightful - although it's mainly about Old World there is also a lot of discussion about various game design issues with the Civ series and attempts to solve them over the years. He is also not afraid to say where he thinks he went wrong (e.g., allowing unlimited tech trading) and he has the experience to discuss topics from different perspectives: game design, programming and historical immersion.

Anyway, this made me feel he should be invited back for CIv 7, although it might not be a good idea to repeat lead designers. I feel similarly about Ed Beach. I think he did an excellent job with Civ 6 in general.

If you could choose, who would you pick as lead designer for Civ 7? Perhaps someone from a different franchise?

I agree that I would love for Ed Beach to come back and be the lead designer. I believe he was also the lead designer for GS as well.

I did assume that Anton would probably take over after being the lead on R&F and NFP. Of course he left Firaxis at the beginning of the year, so now it's hard for me to guess anyone else.

I like Anton but his design contributions were among the least successful parts of Civ 6 for me personally, so I would very much prefer Soren Johnson to return as lead designer. It all depends on the style of Civ game you prefer, however.

Anton is a good human being and most of civ players seem to enjoy his civ design philosophy very much, but he just seems to have exactly opposite tastes to me on every possible layer of civ game design, from the tiniest cosmetic detail to the grandest overall philosophy, so personally I am welcoming to see another lead in Anton's place, since our relationship didn't quite work out :c5unhappy:
