Leader Personalities

Ok, so I've finally gotten to the point where I can win consistently on Prince (mostly due to this forum :goodjob: )

Still, I haven't played enough games to really get to know the personalities of the AI leaders. I know a few, of course; Isabella likes to kill heathens, Ghandi is pretty peaceful and likes to go for cultural wins, Shaka likes to build up an insane amount of military and BACKSTAB ME WHEN I'M SO CLOSE TO FINISHING MY SPACE SHIP....sorry, he's sort of pissed me off in my current game (he had a spy kill my oil well and put his stack on my aluminum thus preventing me from making more modern armor or gunships, the bastard).

Anyway, I guess what I'm curious about is if there exists somewhere a thread with the 'personalities' of each leader listed. That is to say, whether they are peaceful or not, if they are usually good trade partners, what sort of victory they like to aim towards, etc. Naturally some things are obvious (aggressive = will attack you), but it would be nice to have things outlined for easy reference, if it hasn't been done already. I looked but didn't see anything, but that doesn't mean anything heh.

The leaderheads XML file will give a lot of details on specific AI personalities - what "flavors" they have, how likely they are to do specific things in certain situations. It's in Assets\XML directory under Civilizations... I think. (Forgive me - I don't remember the exact file path and I'm at work, so I can't look it up.)

I've found that the leader traits arn't always in sync with their personality - there's a general trend, you're right, but it's not always the case.

Boudica is aggressive, but you can keep her in your back-pocket like a Ghandi if you do things right.

I found the file, thanks for the heads up. Interesting, to the say the least. I guess I could mine out the information I'm looking for and toss it in a spread sheet; a bar graph of iNoTechTradeThreshold or iTechTradeKnownPercent for all the leaders could be useful, assuming I'm guessing correctly what the values stand for.

Stuff like this though is exactly the sort of stuff I'm wondering. I've only played 1 game so far with Boudica around iirc and I killed her off early so didn't really get a chance to catch her flavor, so to speak. Most of the leaders are like that to me, still; guess I'll just have to play more games :crazyeye:

Yeah, good luck with the interpretation on some of that stuff. I think there's some threads in the mod section that explain what some of these variables are. It's not reader friendly to say the least, but they are the hard numbers that the system uses for defining different personalities.

Boudica seams alot like Ghengis. Both can be valued friends providing you tribute, help out in wars, and do not have too close borders.

She's defeinitely not like Monty or Shaka, and not the backstabber that Napolean/Alex/Cathy/Joao are.

Napoleon is not as bad a backstabber as Alex either. Alex is the one that you just can't really plan peace on. He will bs, bs, and bs. Doesn't matter your further away from him than everyone else. The game is geared to go target the human player.

There has to be a LOT of reasons for him to attack others instead of you. Which does occur at least.

I will say I cautiously agree on Napolean. You can stay at peace with him for a pretty hefty price. This is what I have found about him

1) He's pushy early, better be willing to cater to him. Tribute, stop trading with others, you got it.
2) He'll go after you if you have the pyramids. Why? I am pretty sure the guy want them to run representation. Even at poor odds I have seen him (and read on this forum) he'll go after you.
3) He changes civics in a manner that I swear he's trying to pick a fight. Goes to FR early, but will allow you to bribe him back (for a while). He will switch out of representation if you have it to to get out being friendly, which means you have to bribe him to switch back.
4) He rarely asks for your military help in a war (he will ask to stop trading with his enemy though) so forget getting that added diplomacy benefit.

If you follow all the above, he is more reliable than Alex. But is it all worth it??? I just lump him with Cathy/Alex.

Don't do that - just use the ones in my sig (for Vanilla and Warlords) or by karlkrlarson for BtS - will probably save you a few hours ;)

Well, I could write a perl script pretty easy to parse it all out. Since you've already done it, though, why bother :P thanks!

I think it would be useful, though, for one of the good players here to make a thread with each leader and a small blurb about their attitude based on their experiences.

Something like:

Ghandi:
Ghandi likes to tech fast and is mostly peaceful. He can make a very good trading partner if you are on good terms with him. etc etc

or what madscientist wrote above (very very useful)

This would be a great reference for lower level players like me to find himself boxed in between Cyrus and Qin and are trying to figure out if I should go to war immediately before they do, or if I can take the time to build up some infrastructure first. The ALC games have helped a lot in this regard (as have my own), but a reference list would be great.

Just a thought though.

You still get the military struggle benefit if you declare without being asked though, don't you?

Maybe I'm imagining things, but I wanted to boost relations with... I forget who, and joined their war on my own without them asking and could have sworn I got the +1 Mutual Military Struggle.

Yes, you do get the benefit if you join a war while not invited. I am not 100% sure but I think you get a little bigger boost if you got to war when asked.

One more thing on Napolean
5) Never sign a defensive pact with anyone else but him. He will go to to war with your ally just to get you to declare on him.

Napolean, Cathy, and Alex (add Joao also) are classic backstabbers but they all operate somewhat differently. Tell the truth, of these 4 I trust Alex the most and Jaoa the least.

Ori,

I'm having trouble with your link to karlkrlarson's spreadsheet. I don't think you really meant to have the URL be http://www.btsleaderai_302.xls/, did you? I'm not familiar with the .xls domain. :)

Thanks,

Zienth
 Me mistakes? never! (corrected the link). Thanks for pointing it out.
