In the interests of refining our skills, it'd be fun to post a save file on the first turn of a single player game, get a difficulty set up, and see how we can all do.

Anybody want to do this?

I am going to post a monarch game as a random faction (we'll see what we pull) Terra / Standard Size / 9 AI opponents / No Technology Trading... so, let me host the file in a second, I'll let you know what I pulled, and let's see how we can do. :)

I'm in :goodjob:

I am more interested in GOTM style competitions than I am multiplayer. Good call setting this up, Bloody_Eye. As soon as I get off of work and walk my dog I will give this a try.

Game speed is epic, of course.

Why? Are you trying to make it impossible for those of us without a lot of time to finish it?

Whats wrong with making it normal speed?

How goes the game?

Right now, I've taken all of Hatshepsut's land, but I'm pretty economically behind everyone else as a result of all my warmongering. We'll see how it picks up.

Apple -- GOTM stands for game of the month. Basically it's a single-player game that everyone can download and play together :)

Normal speed affects the way the game plays in a few ways I don't like, and epic is by far the most popular. I can't make everybody happy, but you're free to join if you want.

well, i've been better ;)
Both of my scouts got eaten by animals early on.

Then I wanted to plant a city between me an egypt but when I was 2 tiles away a mongolian city popped up in my spot and when I went down to an alternative spot my warrior/setter duo was ambushed by a babarian archer and killed. That pretty much decided the game against me.
shortly after that another monolian city was founded north of me, an aztec to the south, an egyptian to the west and the persian border was visible to the SW.

I had to make a desicion fast and build a worker which I used to hook up the copper. After that I built4 axemen and went south to take some aztec cities. I chose the aztecs because their city was the only one without a wall and not on a hill.
Oh, and I switched to Hinduism to make some friends. egypt founded that relegion and apart from persia everyone around me is hindu. That also makes it impossible for me to bring others into the war. The other hindus don'T wanna kill their friend and persia doesn'T listen to me infidel

Anyway, my axemen with city raider took the city (defended by three archers) with only one loss.
And from there on things got very interesting indeed.

Well, I overexpanded by attacking the mongols, and then Montezuma decided he wanted to cut me out. In the end, time flew by and I was a little too economically stangnant to cut it. My knights versus their riflemen just wasn't enough. Going to give this another shot. Thinking about moving to the flood plains / gold as the first start location. :)

Hah a do-over when you know the map and everything already? If you want it to be like GOTM then follow the GOTM rules and no restarting or anything. Otherwise it's pretty pointless. I was going to give this a shot, but not if people are starting over and cheating.

I've never done a gotm before, so I had no idea.

In that case, I stand defeated. :)

Wow, this is some of the best land I have ever started on! With only 2 cities I have 4 luxuries, 2 food sources, and the copper that I need as a Greek Civilization. Luckily I decided to build my settler as soon as I hit pop 2 when I saw how close the Egyptians were, and was able to build a city on top of the gold that gets me both the wine and pigs. Interestingly enough it was the Mongols and not the Egyptians that almost beat me to that building spot. They then built up near the Incense and Ivory, meaning I will have to take that city soon :-).

I was also lucky enough to have my first religion (from Code of Laws) be founded in my second city, since it has to fight Thebes for its boundaries. It now has more than enough culture with being a holy city w/shrine, and have 2 temples and a library. Also with 3 floodplains and the pigs I currently have 3 specialists there which is giving me a Great Person Farm.

Things are going well, but since I rushed for Code of Laws I am just starting to build up my military. We will soon see if it was too late. I think I will take out the Mongols first, since they have 2 cities very close to me that are pretty far from their capital.

Also, I do have to say that the Epic speed setting is incredibly slow. I like the idea of technologies taking longer, but I dont think they should have touched production speeds. The production speeds are slightly offset by the fact that gold production is at normal speed, but you cannot rush production with gold until much later in the game. If Epic was left just as it is but with production speeds being the same as Normal it would be a very fun setting to play in.

Epic is most popular? Where did you get that idea? Most of what I've heard has been that epic is too mind-bogglingly slow. Personally I haven't tried anything aside from normal, but okay...

Yeah, I see your point if we're doing this to keep score and for these purposes he's already admitted his defeat. I think there's another aspect here and that's to have a common ground where we're all working off the same map and perhaps pick up some tips on how to play this great new game we've got. That's much easier to do if we're all working off the same map, land resources, opponents, etc.

So on that basis I think Arkanin should fire the game up again and see what he learned.
