Let's play: Civ IV!

I think explaining your choices instead of talking about enemy leaders might have been good. To new people what you build seems rather random. Why did you build a warrior to defend capital? The first warrior could just have escorted the settler.

You do need something for "fear for safety". Remember, the commentary is live. I don't put much time thinking into my normal play, but this is a whole new level. I'm essentially doing an entire extra aspect in explaining things and it's pretty easy to screw up since I'm definitely not used to it.

So far all I've built are workers, 1 settler, barracks, and a pile of chariots. I actually did explain briefly on the granary/library. The chariot rush has been far from ideal but I expect when I get to the next segment I'll be able to finish off alex, but the city count wouldn't be any better than just expanding - although I do get the benefit of not having to deal with an extra idiot near me.

It's very nice TheMeInTeam that your capturing the gameplay and uploading to youtube. Thanks. It's remind me of game's speedruns :) keep going doing that :goodjob: And i have a question: what is game speed your are currently play ? :mischief:

It's on normal...but the commentary and explanations are necessarily going to slow me down a bit. I'm guessing 20-25 segments is realistic, possibly a little more.

Nice one!

I thought you might have gushed a bit more over Isabella however ;)

Looking forward to part 3 what are you going to do if Alex gets phalanxes?

You're actually doing great, really enjoyable to watch.

A few points,

-I think it's most interesting for people between noble-monarch. You won't be able to follow this if you've just learned the game.

-I would slow the play speed a bit. Especially, if you open the cityscreen keep it open a bit longer so we can see which tiles you're working and what you're building.

-You didn't have to many choices yet. As Oyzar says, once they come up think out loud maybe halting the play so we can clearly see (hear) why you choose A over B.

He can't. I'll on his capitol in 5-10 turns, he doesn't have IW, and he certainly doesn't have copper yet.

I'll try to adjust. Probably the hardest thing will be to slow down :).

I don't think slowing down is really necesarry, people can pause the video if they want...

One suggestion - try commenting as you go, but with the audio off, so you get the timing for how long you need to talk about something. Then add the real commentary afterwards, in editing. That way you're less focused on the game and can talk more about the choices and decisions - putting in a break for explanation if you run over the time you allotted yourself.

It could be a bit trickier to set up initially, but once you have it down it should be a lot easier and clearer than commenting as you go.

Very nice work TMIT, the sound quality is a bit poor, but you're still coherent, so its not that big of an issue.

What i do find a tad hard to get used to however is the amazing pace at which you play. Now i'd almost consider myself a Civ4 Vet, so i can follow what you're doing on screen, however if somone fairly or completely new to the game watches your video they might get slightly :confused::confused:.

I think you'd be in a position to do amazing clips for advanced players, like most of the regulars on here, however if your scope is the new player you should try to keep things simple :)

It's a good job so far. I think it's very useful for intermediate players in the noble/monarch range, but probably a bit too fast/not enough details for beginners. But again, it's VERY hard to "dumb down" your own style to a lower level.

Nicely done, I know I'd not have the patience to make stuff like this.

I AM going slow :(. The non-full screen has a different feel (mouse at edge of screen doesn't move as you get near the edge, you have to click) and clicking the minimap keeps sending me to timbuktu on occasion (not literally). The commentary is slowing me down too - I can think a lot faster than explain :(.

I'm still working on the picture quality. I think my hardware (especially my headphones) is going to limit sound quality into the foreseeable future.

I'll have some more parts up reasonably soon...it's been a long night for me as I've been posting here in between working on an economics assignment. Yes, that means all nighter.

Once one finishes fumbling around with the recording hardware/software, the process itself is actually pretty easy, so I might do more than one of these, especially if I get used to it.

Maybe you should PM Ginger_Ale to see if you can get a linky on the main page...

I think it's going pretty well - seems like you found a decent balance between explanation and speed. Especially it being the 1st try at this it's not bad.

edit: This should go into the sample game directory somewhere when it's done.

Hi

I think you're are doing a good job of explaining the more important parts. The only that you didnt mention that maybe could be helpful was you dont promote your chariots till they get to a battle so maybe a little mention as to why and which promos you choose like do you go c1 or flanking 1 for the first cpl then c1 to finish or however you do it.

The video quality not HD but you can see ok. Only deal is it is hard to read the screen so little details like what did Monty ask for? alphabet I assume or maybe writing? But that just monor details that might be interesting in game but not really important for learning.

One thing that might be a BIG help is mentioning periodically like bpt, income rate and things like that and saying if whether or not that is going good, bad,so so, whatever for that point in game. Lots of good players always say it not the slider percent but the number of bpt that counts only deal is I have never seen any idae of what is a GOOD number of bpt for a given point in game.

Other thing you could try to immerse viewer in world is get into character of your leader--like since your mehmed a turkish sultan so maybe think about trying something like wear a turban and smoke a hookah and talk in turkish accent as it goes ::runs and hides:: hehe :P :)

True, having a bong hit in between turns would add to the interest level.

Good job, TMIT. I tried running Civ windowed, it sucks big time.

Maybe slowing down and explaining your choices a little more would benefit people who like details.

Good stuff TMIT! I find it a lot more informative to see video of someone playing it than to see pictures. (You might see something that someone taking pictures would neglect to include.)

As many others said, it would be nice to see you slow down a bit, it ain't a race, you know? Personally I wouldn't mind a few more rounds if it meant more time explaining (Yes, I do know you like to play really fast). I agree that editing in speech over the video would be very nice, and that way you can also get multiple takes, there shouldalso be less outside noise (That cough you had in there, for example).

All in all, it's very good, when can we expect the next update?

Parts 3-7 are in the process of uploading to youtube...it seems to take quite some time. I tried to adjust the video quality - it looks great on my media player but it's doubtful it will look that nice on youtube. For this first series I'm not going to do much editing or voice sync or anything like that - I'm a total rank amateur at all things youtube except watching, so it's still getting my feet wet.

Playing slower feels unnatural for me...you can always hit pause ;).
