Lets talk about Korea

Overestimating the average American is a very dangerous mistake. Are you aware of the state of our government? Half the people elected a party that is incompetent and pretends to represent their economic interests, and other half elected a party that is evil and undermines their own economic interests.

But would you want to send your children off to fight some foreign country you don't know about? I doubt it. The thing about World War 2 was that Japan made it persona. In Vietnam though, people had no clue why we were sending men who had no choice. Also, the tv brought a new dynamic, they saw the carnage for the first time.

Don't discount the effect of modern globalization. The US has developed a strong shared fellowship with SK/Japan through modern culture (E gadgets ,baseball etc...) These people are considered less different than : those angry people of the dessert that : make frightening trill noises, or the toothless tanned farmers in rice hats of 60's Vietnam. These are "regular people like us ,with , Playstations® and proper houses."

This theoretical war would look more like the final weeks of WWII more than : Vietnam ,or the Afghan / Iraq wars. Massive bloodshed for each kilometer of stubbornly contested land ,however , the gradual progress would be easy to measure as the war progressed. Most likely ,little to no insurgency in annexed lands. The civilians ,and , POW's would most likely feel "the rich people freed us from our master and will give us food now"

BTW: i am not rallying for an allied invasion of NK. I am just throwing some thoughts out.

Also, the people in NK are well aware of the crapulence of their situation. They don't say it out loud, obviously, because they would be executed and fed to pigs for heresy. It's pretty hard to keep something like "we aren't starving on the other side of the dmz" a secret.

Well I was talking bout a war with China. A war with NK could likely be manipulated to make the American citizenry support it. A war with China though, that would be bad.

This is all nonsense, too. South Korea is an ally of the US and the two nations perform military drills together multiple times every year, much to China and DPRK's displeasure. Don't for one minute think that the US is leaving SK any time soon.

This is just one example of Korean hate for foriegners, go look up the MBC documentary, at first you'll think it's a joke because it's so poorly done but it's a legit news story in SK. Or how about looking up the US embassy's warning about Americans going to work in SK? SK hates Americans (all foreigners in fact) but the East Asian "saving face" is what you see in the media so it doesn't appear that the hatred is widespread.

There is an element of xenophobia in South Korean society, but unfortunately all East Asian nations have xenophobic tendencies. I don't think SK is any more xenophobic than Japan or China.

My idea for a DPRK is to never allow the player to play as them. In fact neither does the computer, and they don't even exist on the map. The only thing they would do is appear on the score view and have 5x the leader's score, and would have a diplomatic screen pop up every once in a while telling you how superior they are or to demand things from you.

Which means I guess than can win if you have time victory on.

I haven't seen a Japanese or Chinese version of this, yes those countries are also xenophobic but I think that SK beats them by a fair margin.

I think a much more likely explanation is an irrational, but understandable fear of those who are different than oneself. Xenophobia tends to lessen with each generation as those of one culture gain a better understanding of those of another culture. The Internet and the increasingly global society have accelerated that change somewhat. South Korea isn't nearly as xenophobic as some of you seem to think!

The thing is: while the nations of the east are openly xenophobic of each other. The Koreans towards the Japanese. The Japanese towards the Chinese , all the above toward the west,and , the Australians towards everybody in the region except their fellow white British in NZ. U.S/UK/EU don't have the same xenophobia toward them, or , purposely suppress it individually in fear of being called "racist" , a term thrown around quite easily in the west for any mention of racial comment/opinion. It's kind of stereotyping to say that Australians are xenophobic to everybody in the region. I know that we are a fairly racist country as far as first world ones go, but that is mostly the bogans (Australian rednecks) complaining about how illegal immigrants who don't speak English are somehow going to steal their jobs. Most Australians I've met are not only not racist but are inclined to be pretty horrified at racism.

The difference is that in other countries these views are in the minority, or at least are criticised in public, that video was on one of the main TV channels as a news article. Don't get me wrong, there are a LOT of Koreans who don't share these views but they don't really speak out against them either.

That video was also controversial and MBC had to apologize for it. According to their apology, the video was produced by another company, not MBC. I'd also point out that it's just about the only example you'll find on a major broadcasting network.

Look, some South Koreans are xenophobic and/or racist. But that's true of people in every country. We've got the "they took 'er jerbs!" crowd in the US, too. But that crowd isn't the majority here and it's not the majority in South Korea, either.

I don't want to draw a false equivalence. There's definitely more xenophobia and racism in South Korea than there is in the United States. Yes, SK is even worse than Japan. But it's not nearly so bad as some of the posters here are claiming and it's getting better.
