Lets talk about Korea

It's kind of stereotyping to say that Australians are xenophobic to everybody in the region. I know that we are a fairly racist country as far as first world ones go, but that is mostly the bogans (Australian rednecks) complaining about how illegal immigrants who don't speak English are somehow going to steal their jobs. Most Australians I've met are not only not racist but are inclined to be pretty horrified at racism.

There's a difference between xenophobia and just hating everything about the country because you're rivals.

My idea for a DPRK is to never allow the player to play as them. In fact neither does the computer, and they don't even exist on the map. The only thing they would do is appear on the score view and have 5x the leader's score, and would have a diplomatic screen pop up every once in a while telling you how superior they are or to demand things from you.

Which means I guess than can win if you have time victory on.

Yeah, that seems to be the case for DPRK right now, and the part of me that doesn't want to re-enact the fallout games would rather it keeps that way.

Also, the last part usually seems true for most the civ AI in the games :D

"Asians eat rice"!? Your racist ,you may as well be Hitler!"
Pretty sure Asians eat rice, what with it being their staple grain and all. Chinese and Tibetans grow wheat as well to make tasty steamed buns.

Back on topic... what was it again? We need to protect Japan from North Korea to ensure a steady supply of imports.

What would be nice would be if the people and the army rebelled against the Kim Jong Un, he wouldn't be able to do squat :)

Any chance of actually discussing an NK mod in this thread? not that the geopolitics isn't utterly riveting

You are Hitler

um, yeah , this did jump off the rails a bit. There already is a modern NK Civ mod anyway, but , its a little more grounded than : some of the wild ideas thrown around before the thread turned into punditry.

Swerving back to the topic of a custom Civ a bit. Shouldn't there be a modern SK Civ to stand as a direct rival?

That would be a good idea! UA could be "Musical Hub" and it would be a cultural multiplier.

You could then add to the help section of South Korea how much they couldn't spend as much money as Kim Jong Un.

If we're doing North and South Korea we definitely need to add East and West Germany. Just for the sake of communism v. capitalism. :D

USSR: if you capture a city, you can liberate it later, but you still get get 50% of its output? Not a bad mod idea, have seen a few interesting ones floating around with different abilities from the norm.

BTW, North Korea isn't really capitalism, its closer to Autocracy, what with them ranting on how they're gonna dominate the globe :p

No one ever said North Korea was Capitalist.

Wow that's some really derailed thread.

Actually, the current in-game Korea represents the united Korea before the divide, so saying that "we only need North Korea, since South Korea is in the game" is wrong. This is an interesting read, I`ll just quote the part that matters here:

When researching the Korean civ, Firaxis leaned on publisher 2K's presence in South Korea.

"When they heard that we were going to do Korea, they were like, 'Do it right,'" says Beach. "That was one of the few civs where we had to send out trial balloons."

The team settled on the 15th century ruler Sejong the Great, a popular, pre-modern figure they felt that most Koreans would feel comfortable with and who would be far removed from political disagreements that have divided the Asian nation since the mid-20th century.

"That was kind of the great simplification," says Beach. "Going back and doing a Renaissance-era leader who governed the whole united peninsula of Korea and helped establish their language and everything like that. Once we settled on who we were going to have as the leader there, it was clear that that disentangled us from any potential modern-day issues. It was a good way to go."
So yeah, if we are talking about creating a North Korean civ we will need South Korea as well.

What if they had units and unique abilities and such that gave them a multiplier for whatever but also have an EXTRA multiplier for when they are fighting each other? Clever? Yes? Yes. :)
