Wasn't Greece metal working inferior to many other people even during their prime.
That Middle Ages was a dark time is a myth created during the early modern time, much like that about ancient Greece and Romans technological superiority.
 
^Do you mean those other people in Yurop who lived (at best) in villages with hay roofs? I suppose they weren't as advanced (widely speculating, i know) :)

But maybe they developed better weapons after they discovered those dragon pits?
 
Hay roofs also are very good when it comes to courting pyromaniacs.
 
Fortunately, it took only 800 years until gunpowder was discovered (i.e stolen and copied over from China), and raging pyromaniacs had to resort to improvizing, and so, the torch was born.
