Liberty, Equality, Fraternity - Civ3 Conquests scenario

Message from George III, by the Grace of God, King of Great Britain, France, Spain, and Ireland, Defender of the Faith, etc. and Elector of Hannover.

The work, of the brave men of this land is almost done. Today we can announce that Bordeaux has capitulated to free forces.

Casualites were high. 2 units of Imperial Guard, 1 voltgier, 2 musketmen, and one unit of Imperial Cavalry. British losses were 1 unit of Lifeguards. Unfortunately, our gunners got slightly carried away during the early stages of fighting, but the town has now fallen.

bordeauxyw2.jpg

In surrounding areas, units of French Imperial Guard were knocked out south of Bordeaux, north of Marseilles, and east of Montuban (this was a rather unfortunate incident where we needlessly lost two units of Household Cavalry. The commander has since been replaced (don't select a stack, and then tell the entire stack to attack by accident!!)).

The taking out of those French units was particularly important because it opened the roads between France and Spain, allowing redcoats to pour across.

Also, a Swedish transport making a run for the North sea was intercepted and sunk.

Spain has learnt the lesson, that if you play with matches, you will get burnt. France and Sweden are still being taught. The British will not be brow-beaten by aggression, and will extract revenge. Even if we have to wait. There is yet one more partner in the Axis of Evil, who has rode our lands, fightened our people, and destroyed our crops. Their day is yet to come.

God Save the King!

Oh, some more Iron Maiden lyrics, particularly apt for the French at this point:
Im waiting in my cold cell when the bell begins to chime
Reflecting on my past life and it doesnt have much time
Cos at 5 oclock they take me to the gallows pole
The sands of time for me are running low

When the priest comes to read me the last rites
I take a look through the bars at the last sights
Of a world that has gone very wrong for me

;)

Celebreations ring out from every church in the land as the War with France is finished. 7th May, 1809, The day that Western Europe has been waiting for for years is finally here.

The three units of Voltgier in Montauban were over run, with relative ease, such has been the destruction of French forces.

Reports are coming in that Napoleon has officially abdicated and we are preparing a home for him on St Helena, where he will be treated with fairness, like the great leader he was.

The King would like to thank those countries that have helped in the French cause (Prussia), and thank them for the sacrifices they made in terms of gold, and men, to help restore peace to Europe.

Lets hope another long shadow does not descend across Europe from the East.

Long Live the King!

Well played Soul Warrior, it has been great having you in the game and you have been a fantastic adversary!

Hey,

Well with the Fall of France I believe the game is over.

Don't get me wrong. I'd love to see the 6 Austrian Fieldmarshals & the world against the British, but I think it would be :deadhorse:

So :hatsoff: to Quarky & his overpowered troops. :D

It was a great game. It was a fast game.
You guys are great. :goodjob:

Greygamer it was a good alliance we had. Never once did I fear that it would collapse. Anyone believe the propaganda about a Prussia-Austrian split? :mischief:

I have to say that the war reports that were posted in this game were amazing. I wish all the games I play in had this quality of reports. I looked forward to seeing everyones turn. Not just my own. :)

I also agree with greygamer that this scenario needs Mod'd
better. But I also like this Napoleonic game. If you all like to try this one I'm game. We could play someone different. I'd like to try Spain or maybe the British in this one.

Thats my 2 cents for the game. The Tyrant is gone and peace controls the lands.
Hey this is my 1001 post. :run:

Thanks everyone for a SUPERB game. Really, this has been not just the best Civ3 game have played, but one of my favourite gaming experiences. Negotiating with all of all of you guys, and in the end cracking some skulls ;) was awesome, and things were looking very tight for a while.

Would love to try the new scenario, HOWEVER, I am away for a few days next week (Mon to Thur from memory), so if you don't mind that, it would be a privilege to join (Austria, Russia, or Spain would be my top three choices).

Thanks for the kind words. You're

Lets see how greygamer & soul warrior feels. But I for one would wait till you can game. I believe a group of 4 again would work. Maybe greygamer would like a BIGGER nation.

No Way Mon. That Sux!!!!

Well there is 3 of us OK-ing another round of gaming. Remember it wouldn't start till next week or 10 days or so. What do you say Greygamer?

First I'd like to say thanks to you all thanks for a great first time PBEM experience (not just Civ 3 but ever!)

I think we all had a bit of a rant at one another at sometime (;) @Blaze) but it was still a very  experience and encouraged me to join more PBEMs and start a few of my own :D

Well I'd be up for a re-match however the scenario Blaze mentioned won't work as PBEM because there is a limit of 8 players. The excess civs would disappear.
What's needed is a mod whereby the nations are made more equal, yes I know it's not historically accurate but gameplay would be improved.

I've already had some thoughts on this, there is also an 'improved' Napoleonic mod availiable on this site. Though it would have to be moded for PBEM (too many civs again).
I'd like to see better 'elites' for the weaker civs. as well as a Spanish UU 'Guerilla' and some kind of Horse Artillery (weak but fast good for defending cavalry armies).

I do like this period of warfare (i.e. 19th Century/Industrial era) and would love something that extended it a bit more. Possibly one based around 1860-1910 but designed as a PBEM. I'm not experienced enough at modding to take on such a project at the moment though

Would this (the current Napoleonic) scenario work with the AI playing as Britain/France? I was thinking about the players taking the weaker nations as both Blaze and I had great fun with Austria and Prussia despite their low attack factors. Otherwise I'd love Russia for the next one and possibly Monarch level to boost the AI's chances

Is there another Napoleon scenario that has already been modified by someone in this site? I think I saw one somewhere. Perhaps that one might fit a bit better. Although I think any scenario is going to be unbalanced, the difference in this particular game was that the diplomacy favour GB in a big way.

Otherwise, I guess we would have to run this one again. The biggest reservation will probably be a natural bias to stop Britain winning, which might not be fair on whoever plays that country

If anyone wants to start another Napoleonic scenario, either this one again, or a custom one, count me in.

I have played a game awhile back that had Horse artillery. I'm pretty sure it was a napoleonic game.

@ Greygamer. This the one from Nov. 2003.

Wonder if a lurker or one of our friends could help put together a few changes or make this new "improved" Nap MOD PBEM friendly? :help:

I don't mined any game with this group. Lets put something together.

Anybody feel like Just click you'll get the hint. :cringe:

I also think we need a French player at the "Uncas" F&I PBEM ;)

I take pride in this PBEM. Not just because Austria was 2nd & could Fieldmarshal 6 Armies. But because of the sportsmanship & diplomacy between us & because of the Posts. Mon that was good stuff.:D

@ Quarky Check out "Rome Must Burn" PBEM(happy trails)
we are trying to carry on the post reports with quality & flash.

I'll play Japan. ;)

It is possible to fix this scenario with house rules if you analyse why Britain won so quickly.
Quarky & Soul Warrior are in the best position to carry out that discussion. For example Britain could be restricted diplomatically if that was it's main advantage. The final MPP between Britain and the Ottomans probably killed this game especially in the light of the British-Swedish MPP. IOW despite Britain's reputation being trashed the Ottomans still signed the MPP which suggests it is the way the AI makes it's decisions that is at fault. Blaze and I also noticed that the Ottomans despite having an alliance with us against Russia targeted Britain/France first whenever they were in an alliance against them (in game terms this made no sense).

Thinking out loud
A quick fix for these issues could be no RoP rape and MPPs must be honored for the length of those treaties (at least with the AI) and limit the alliances that the Human players can make in some way. Also tech trades between players should be restricted/forbidden as it is too easy for them to co-ordinate their research and gain a huge advantage over the AI's or another player. Perhaps limiting player tech trades to techs possessed by the AI or limited (for non AI rades) to once per game. I'd also sugggest moving up to Monarch to give the AI nations a production/research advantage. If some countries have a big production edge they could be restricted from the conditions they go into 'wartime'. Also it is possible to mod the scenario to have France in Monarchy at the start if that was a significant factor.

In the Rise of Rome PBEM that Blaze mentioned it was decided that Rome/Carthage and Macedon/Persia must concentrate on their particular wars and alliances were restricted to 1 AI & 1 Player (total 3 civs).

If we are talking re-match perhaps Quarky should take France :mischief:

from my prespective i had the following problems:

* unlike GB, i was surrounded by 4 nations. (Spain, Austria, Prussia and GB)
i had to fend off threats from all of these directions, while attacking GB.

* france starts the game in REPUBLIC AND LOCKED WAR.
not good to the economy, war weariness and general well being!
i was forced to go into anarchy, while smack in my GA.
lost a goodly 7 turns production there.

---possible solutions-----

* uncheck the locked war condition.
* change win conditions to allow VP points.
* limit human alliances (only 1+1 humans VS any other?)
* uncheck trades (especially techs, but also lux-resources)
* keep the ratio of AI to HUMAN even (4 AI + 4 Humans)

it will require some modding (which i have never done) but seems to even out the gameplay.

Soul Warrior, did you go to WARTIME?

I found that I really kicked on, once I change to that from Normalcy.

Perhaps all that is needed is:
1) Higher AI level (although English cities in Portugal and Italy were close to being overrun by the AI anyway at various times).
2) France to start in MONARCHY (not historical, but France needs to make the switch anyway).
3) Britain (and France?) cannot go to war production (if France didn't go to Wartime, then I think this would balance out with Britain, so unless SW went to war production, the same rule for both I think).
4) MPP's honoured with AI.
