like civ 6 gameplay, still hate the graphics style

I'm playing in 4k and like the visual clarity.

I booted up Civ 5, and was amazed how basic everything looked. The proportions looks off. Like you have pastures the size of cities. The sprawl is really well done in Civ 6 and you don't have the ugly trading posts.

Overall, I always appreciated Civ 5's muted, mature look, which always reminded me of Civ 3's city view. I think my dream is a Civ game that looks something like Civ 3's city views but in a real-time isometric map.

You get used to it, and even start to like it.

I got used to it only when I'm playing in the main screen. Can't stand those leader animations tho, some look so silly it seems almost like a joke. Also they took away leader's background scenary wich looked so well on V.

I'm playing in 4k and like the visual clarity.

I'm not having a go at you, but try playing it on a small laptop screen and get back to me. VI is designed to be played on a widescreen monitor at high resolution. On a low-mid spec laptop with a 15 or 17 inch screen, its horribly cluttered.

V on the other hand is a much cleaner map with nice big icons that works really well on a smaller screen.

Not saying one is better or worse, it depends on your situation.

While I like the liveliness of Civ VI's game world (esp animations), the overall look of the UI and icons is definitely reminiscent of a plastic-heavy graphic look that Facebook games and their woeful ilk prefer. And don't get me started on the leaderscreens--the dreadful messy gloom of most (albeit not all) of the leaderscreen backgrounds makes it feel almost like a satire or unfinished prototype. And some leaders, like Alexander, look like plastic too. I don't mind stylized looks (I loved Civ IV's leaders), but I resent how cartoony some are in VI (Pedro, Victoria, Alexander etc) compared to others (Cyrus, Poundmaker, etc). The inconsistency rankles all the more when you notice things like Tamar's out-of-proportion hand size or Pericles' ridiculous helmet (not at all like his real life bust and more like a cartoon Solon).

Gameplay wise diplomacy and AI still have a long way to go before they become as threatening as the Civ IV AI (whose might makes diplomacy much more valuable).

I'm hopeful that the second expansion will improve diplomacy somewhat, but doubt we will get to the Civ IV sweet spot where each turn had so much excitement and depth, even for peaceful builders or those who already conquered most of the world.

Civ IV had diplomatic victory, vassals, random event quests, numerous complex trade deals with AI (not just for techs), complex AI diplomacy dealings (both more predictable and differentiated than Civ VI's haphazard "ignore past events and friendships and denounce all as warmongers" AI). Oh well.

I hope VI might introduce some new features we haven't seen before or at least in a while--an economic victory of some sort for example--the much reviled Civ Revolution had it, and the board game had a fairly ingenious economic victory as well.

I like Civ 6 gameplay. But I still miss Civ 5's style of art and graphics. I hate the cartoonish style of civ 6. Anyone else feel similarly? I want to like Civ 6's style, but it just grates on me. Anyone have any persuasive perspectives that may help me appreciate Civ 6's graphics in a new way?

I have always had certain "negative thoughts" on the graphics of Civ 6, but I think what would have redeemed it were better leader animations. A perfect example would be to have a Shaka Zulu that doesn't look like your friend who hasn't seen you in years and wants to give you a big hug. Shaka is horribly portrayed in the game and Frederick Barbarossa, well....

There's a lot of things that could be improved before we start talking about overhauling the graphics

I've got over 1000 hours into Civ 6, and I have to agree with you. Civ 6 has almost everything I want from a civ game, but I can't swallow the graphics. For me, there is just something wrong with the world. The colors of grass and plains, forest and rainforest just does not appeal to me.

I would LOVE a Civ 6 gameplay with Civ 4 Blue Marble style graphics (you know, the mod that styled all the textures based on satelite images from NASA).
Even the textures in Civ 5 had a more natural style to it, and I'd prefer that over Civ 6 textures any day.

The cartoony style of the Governors, and Techs and stuff on the other hand does not bother me. It's all about the colors on the map for me that turns me off :)

The cartoonieness is not bad. I’m very much a person attracted to visuals, which is why I prefer civ 6 to civ 5. I do agree though that some of the leaders are cartoonie. It appears that there were two conflicting views regarding art styles: some leaders look more cartoonie than others; and so they decided to accommodate both views. Shaka and Robert the Bruce are less cartoonie than say Gandhi or Philip.

I did not like it at first but now I prefer it to V's style. The only thing that still gets me is that some leaders look like exaggerated caricatures and others more like V's more realistic style.

The only thing I really miss from V is the diplomatic backgrounds... the one's in 6 are so dark, boring and unless you're paying attention all feel the same.

I think Civ V is the best looking game in the series, though I'm not that fond of it when it comes to the gameplay.

I also have a really hard time with the Civ VI graphics. "Cartoony" isn't something that's inherently negative for me but I really don't find the visual direction for the leaders (and governors) appealing. Some are alright but a for many of them I have a sort of gut "ugh, get that thing away from me" reaction which is not... well, very good, haha. I still think it's a horrible idea to have the leaders on a "separate" screen than the rest of the game and an even more horrible idea to have stuff like the denouncements just pop up in your face when there's no actual gameplay component to them. It's just a waste of time.

The map just looks cluttered to me and I have a very hard time to sort of pick out what's what just on a visual level. Maybe that's a problem with how I view these types of games but I just don't pick up on all the details that are actually there.

Doesn't really hinder my enjoyment of the game all that much but yeah, I do wish it had a different look.

I started a Civ 5 game last night just to remind myself what it looks like. After playing Civ 6 some of the gameplay doesn't feel right, but the graphics do look good. I like aspects of Civ 6's graphics style, especially how fog-of-war is shown, but the units and combat are really inferior.
