Linux Users! Cedega 5.1 released, CivIV supported

prenumero - which distro are you using?
I'm using Gentoo 2005.1 for AMD64, running on an AMD dual core 3800+ with a GB of ram, and a nvidia 6600 graphics card.

In an earlier post i said that Sevo-mod works, but i take that back. Game play becoms choppy after 15-20 turns and eventally freezes.

But normal game play without any mods works just as good as in windows. Its a little faster sometimes and a little slower sometimes.

I am really impressed with Cedega, Civ4 actually works! hopefully plain "Wine" will catch up with being able to play Civ4 in near future so everybody can play for free.

<deleted> Copy protection schemas should be left out entirely from games imo. This is one of the major issues that have hold back Wine, CodeWeavers and Transgaming from delivering products that make linux/freebsd playing windows games.

I for one would be interested in feedback from anyone that has played the game on both platforms as to how performance compares with regard to both speed and stability issues.

I not only play on both platforms, but on the same pc. Dual booting.

My experience is that barring major bugs, most games actually play faster under cedega mostly due to the builtin optimized dlls and also an operating system that handles system things, like paging, much more elegantly than what that product coming out of Redmond does.

That being said, when there are glitches, they are typically showstoppers.

As for Civ IV, I got it running no problem, although I cannot play multiplayer yet. :-( It gives a versioning error, even after copying down the entire game directory from the Windows install. The graphics are noticeably faster under Cedega. I am a 3.2MHz P4, 2GB RAM, NVidia G*Force 660 PCI-E. However, the same late game slowdown on the huge maps still applies, even under Cedega, but at least it doesnt blue screen me this way.

If anyone sees any solution to multiplayer, let me know!

I had this running with Cedega 5.0.3, getting the 5.1 update now to see if it's any better! It ran better for me than Windows in some aspects, but worse in others (had some font and keybinding weirdness). It was definitely just as usable though.

My specs in case anyone is interested:

Dell Inspiron 8600 running Ubuntu 5.10
Pentium M 1.4 GHz
1.5 Gigs RAM
Nvidia GeForce 4200 Go

I usually need to have fairly low graphics settings due to a 2 year machine, but having the 1.5 Gigs of RAM really helps for bigger maps and late game stuff.

I have a feeling the versioning error is due to running on another type of filesystem..

Same way players running on FAT32 and NTFS filesystems will get version errors.
This is a bug thou, and should be fixed in next patch.. so will be interesting to see if multiplayer will work then.

Finally I can play civ4 without spending time on anoying reboots to OS i no longer use =P

Though not without problems. I get about 20min play time and then screen will start to flash, I can save and exit though so it's only an annoyance, major annoyance (my guess is that one frame buffer stops updating properly). Sometimes loading a game wastes ~90% of cpu usage leading to very long load time and fps of less than 5 when I eventually get in game, I just usually do "killall wine -9" and restart. I've had civ4 crash to desktop 3 times now too.

Other than that my games is progressing well, though I have to restart civ4 every 20min.

I'm almost exactly the same - have a lowly 2500XP Athlon chip. Tried the game couple nights ago - unpatched it works fine but i'm having problems patching to v1.52.

Re. copy protection, I scratched my C3C disc to shreds about a month after buying it so couldn't play tht game until i bought another copy! There must be a better way...

Anyway, cedega v5.1 seems on the surface much slicker - its about time their product lived up to the hype.

Happy (linux) gaming

Hi,

Civ IV is running fine with Cedega 5.1. However, I have one issue: When I start a new game, all the map is revealed! (seeing rivers, forest in black). I have installed the latest nvidia driver but didnt help. I have a Geforce-4 MX 4000. I don't have this kind of problem with xp. Anyone else has this problem or is it just me?!
Any tips to solve this maybe?
Thanks in advance!

complete noob questions, and I hope its not too far off topi, I apologize if it is.

If I install Linspire 5-0 (linux) on my Laptop, what will happen to all my Windows files, like documents, music, downloads, games, saves, etc. Will I have to reinstall everything, like CIV IV for instance, or iTunes?

And secondly...

Another incredibly stupid question, as good as I am with most software, Im horrible with mist hardware and OS's. So, what do I have to do to run Windows and Linspire off the same laptop, and how much will it slow me down?

Lastly, I've heard some people say that there having problems with Cedega, and other say its fine. All I need to be able to do is run CIV IV and two other games smoothly. Can I get Cedega to do this, or should i stick with Windows XP for now?

I would really, really appreciate a response.

Given that you already have win XP on the laptop, I'm not sure what benefit you'd be getting from dual booting - if you were keeping both OS's then you can just use windows for the games. If you're switching to just Linspire then it'd be best to test compatibility first - free up as much HDD space as you can and make a partition to put Linspire on with something like PartitionMagic (thus keeping your Windows installation), install Linspire on there and try it out.

If you want to copy your files over, you can either copy them to another PC or make a partition which both OSs can access (FAT32 format) for them. You'll need to reinstall the actual software I believe, and I'm not sure how well iTunes will work on Linspire - I've never tried that.

You should be able to get much more detailed help from Linux support forums - a bit of googling will help :)

thanks beefonthebone, but I gotta ask...

how do you so quickly respond to my posts? kinda weird

I guess if I can manage to get CIV IV to run pretty smoothly on high graphical settings on a compaq with only 512 mb of RAM and a 1.4 Ghz processor, and a very standard ATI graphic card (I think) then I can manage not running it on windows.

Not to self-promote, but the site in my signature I find funny.

Props to me for the most boring posts ever, except my "if life was a game of CIV IV" post.

I am out.

Hmm I haven't been as lucky as you guys. I've installed Cedega5.1 (the 14 day demo) in Kubuntu 5.10, I was able to install civ4 and the patch

Set mode to winxp, and started running the game.. I get the splash window (sometimes with the graphics sometimes not) and go as far as "Init XML (uncached)" and that's all. The windows disappear, the console mentions an unhandle exception and claims to start the debugger (but doesn't ;) ) and I'm back to square one :(

I'll have to research this if I have time, unless somebody here already researched it ;)

tombeef and BeefontheBone (are you guys related? :crazyeye: ): This topic is better discussed in our Computer Talk forum. Or even better, at LinuxQuestions.org. ;)

On topic, I installed Civ4 last weekend. It ran rather poorly, so I
  • installed patch 1.52
  • updated to the most recent ATI drivers
Now, when I start the game, I get to the screen with the globe turning, and the words "Civilization IV" across the top, but that's it. No buttons, no options, no nothing. I have to switch to a console and kill all cedega and wine processes to clear it out. Think that wold just be the patch?

Not related, but he has managed to combine my nick and my real name there in a scary manner :)

Regarding how quickly I responded, that can't have taken me 9 minutes to type - loads of time :)
