Lion Compatibility?

I am experiencing crashes with the Steam version of Civ IV BTS on a 2010 13" macbook air. Almost never crashed under snow leopard
 
I've played Civ4 BtS from Steam under Snow Leopard on my iMac without trouble, but I just bought a new 13'' Macbook Air and downloaded Civ4 to it from Steam as well but on the Macbook Air it's far from trouble free.

- When I start it up in its original graphic settings it more or less works ok. The only problem is that any and all trees on the map are flickering. When I zoom in on them I can see that the flicker is caused by lots of white pixels on the trees. Almost like interference/ noise on an old TV. JUST on the trees, everything else is fine. Very strange.

- As soon as I change any graphics settings requiring a restart (changing overall graphics from low to medium for instance), after the restart the game is totally screwed up. I get through all the settings screens alright, but at the final point of initialising the new game, when the screen is supposed to start showing the map, it just stays on the initialising screen. I can hear the sound of the new game in the background, just no map. Fortunately I could set the graphics settings back to low from the initial start up menu, but it's very weird. On the iMac when I do higher graphics settings I may get lower frame rates, but not this freezing up.

Since others have reported that the disk version of Civ4 seems to run fine, it seems that the problem is some combination of the new Airbook hardware and/or Lion and/or Steam.

Anyone any ideas or any solutions?
 
Oh yes, trying to load a mod into BtS also causes the above freeze problem.
 
I have the disc versions of 4, Warlords & Beyond The Sword. I was holding off upgrading to Lion because I was scared I would lose the ability to play.
It's happened to me before, when I was on a windows machine, my favorite game was Close Combat, which ran on Win 95. I upgraded to XP and that game is not supported and still isnt usable on any windows system.
The Lion upgrade looks slick to me, but I've been burned in the past.
I also have Civ 3 Complete, any word on that?

I am a total Civ newb, I just got my first Civ for Mac game last week.
I had been playing Civ Revolutions on my PS3, and quite liked it.
Civ 4 blows it's doors off though, naturally, but I still play Revolutions regularly. :)
 
I recently installed Lion and replaced a defunct graphics card with the ATI Radeon HD 6850. Now, when I open Civ Beyond the Sword on my MacPro, the screen hangs on the 'init Engine' with the blue bar 2/3 loaded. I don't know if this is caused by Lion or the video card. Does anyone have thoughts on this?
 
Do you have the following setting in
~/Documents/Civilization IV Beyond the Sword/CivilizationIV.ini ?

; Enable the logging system
LoggingEnabled = 1

If not, try setting it, and then look at the PythonErr.log file at:

~/alan/Documents/Civilization IV Beyond the Sword/Logs/PythonErr.log

If there's any text in that file after you have tried to launch BtS, copy it here and it may give a clue.

No, there's nothing unusual there.

While it is hanging, you *could* try opening /Applicaitons/Utilties/Activity Monitor.app and selecting BtS. Then click Sample Process at the top of the window. That should produce a text file after it has taken a sample of the program's activity. We could have a look at that.

My guess is that there's some incompatibility between the Lion graphics driver for that card and BtS, but it would be interesting to know if anyone is running BtS successfully on the card - in any OS X version
 
I believe the card is only compatible with Lion. I tried the Activity sample but the file is very long and I don't think the server accepts these text files. I found little that might help when I scanned the file. I could load it up in chunks but this is not an emergency as I have other options.

Thanks for having a look. I'm sure there will be a firmware update as there are some other issues like the dysfunctional option-key on startup.
 
About Lion ...

It seems there is no problem of compatibility. Running BTS is ok, modding tools ( such as Nifskope, Aorta, Squish-dds ) runs fine :) but ...

I get a font problem. Before my update to Lion, BTS showed me the serif regular font : sylfaen.ttf and now, it shows the no-serif arial.ttf :confused:

Should I mannually install sylfaen.ttf inside one of my fonts folder ( system library - library - user library ) ???

Any clue please ? Thanks :)

me neither but as I used onyx to clean my caches ( including fonts caches for all applications inside the Mac ) well ... The usual typo came back by itself in Civ4. :) :) :)
 
I'm having problems in Lion, I just installed last week and I get the following error when I try to launch BTS:

Initalize Renderer failed. Check DirectX Installaion, Latest Graphics Drivers and Graphics Settings

Have you tried holding down the Command key as you launch Civ4, and switching to window mode or changing the graphics resolution?
