I didn't misunderstand him, which is why I said "both pure and mixed".

Whiskey is a nice thing to be mixed with other things, beer is the one that shouldn't be mixed!

Same reason I hate mother-in-law jokes. It is a running joke that lost its humour a long time ago. Sure the guy might not be too bright (not sure on that myself, partly because I don't think intelligence is very easily to quantify) but then so aren't a lot of people. It is just so pointless, cheap and lazy.
