If anyone has answers to any of these, I'd luv ta hear em.

* Sometimes there's no pop-up when another civ declares war on me. Can be quite surprising when the bombing starts outta nowhere.

* The city governors automatically start on their next unit/improvement after building units, but I get the advisor pop-up after they build improvements. The latter is definitely better, but I'm damned if I can figure how to change this in the governor screens.

* The trade advisor says "getting close to a deal here" when you're not.

* There's a widely-spread rumour that holding down the shift key speeds up the AI's turns. Doesn't work for me.

* Germany is always one of the lamest AI civs.

afaik there's no way... it reminds of CTP 1.0, before they added message icons for everything that was built. Before that, you kept hearing "building complete" without even knowing which city built what (units or improvements).

Maybe you are getting close, but need to give more than you want to give ;)

Holding the shift key speeds up unit movement, whether your own or AI.

* Germany is always one of the lamest AI civs.

depends on taste. I like them :D
