Little questions & answers thread

I don't play
The new Ubudiah Mosque…does it add

50% to the Yields Of the improvement (ie warehouse bonuses)
or
50% to the Yields On the improvement (ie base yields, bonus yields from abilities like Shawnee+prod on terrans, etc.)

The latter--inherent yield of the tile with improvement without warehouse bonus.

What happens when you specialize a town that doesn't have any connections (however it IS connected to my empire's trade network via its Fishing Quay - I can assign it resources)? Is the food just lost?

Edit: It says "New citizen in 11 turns" (as if it wasn't specialized), but that counter never goes down.

...

Yes, if it doesn't connect to any city on the same continent, the food is wasted. You will still get the gold and specialization benefit, however.

Well it's a fishing town, so that specialization benefit doesn't help much!
Weird how it says it's not connected to any other settlement... Yet another thing in this game that I still struggle to understand, even after 660 hours!

I ended up upgrading the town to a city.

My current understanding is that settlement connections over water only work across the same continent, as stupid as it sounds :) While land connections take roads into account.

You can use continent lens to verify if this works for you as well.

Are you sure? I could swear that the treasure island DL settlements are always connected to my nearby homeland coastal cities, and these are both on different continents. Maybe it's a map size issue, because I tend to play on normal or small, and there, the distance is small enough.

Wow, you nailed it - I just loaded up an old save to check, and Kition is my only settlement on the Asia continent...

Thank you! You learn something new every day :)

@Siptah FYI this was on a Normal sized map. Perhaps the conditions change in the next age with distant lands (this was antiquity)..

I once had settlements 4 tiles apart, both with fishing quays. They weren't connected, and their continent was different.

I actually submitted a bug report for this.

You're welcome!

Knowing this surely helps when choosing potential hub town locations.

I'm not sure, but it worked for me so far.

I think @Berrern gave the answer: it changes from antiquity to exploration. And now that they have mentioned it, I remember how this ruined one of my very first games, back in February, with Aksum on an Archipelago map.

I'm 100% sure this issue is present in the modern era as well. Last week I tried creating a few hub towns in the modern era, and was unpleasantly surprised that it's still a thing.

I just went into a game and you are correct: even in modern, different continents block connections.

I also found out why I'm confused though: treasure islands can be in the DL while still being on the home continent. That's why I'm usually able to connect my settlements between these islands and my mainland. What would the historical example be for this? Cyprus for North African civs? Socotra for Arabians?

The most direct historical examples for these are probably the Macaronesian Islands, which served as a stepping stone to the New World for Spain and Portugal

But aren‘t these the opposite? On different continent (either Africa or none, certainly not Europe), while not being Distant Lands?

I was thinking of islands that are on the same continent but can be considered distant lands. Hence, Cyprus, which afaik is geographically in Africa, and Socotra which is in Asia, but both are actually closer to another continent and seem to resemble the shores of that continent more than their geographically correct continent.

I was just wondering if there are actually better examples than these two?

Both continent and distant lands are somewhat fuzzy terms, so it is hard to get definitive answers. The Azores are certainly not on the African continent. Also not Europe, but if the world map was in Civ7 terms, the Azores would probably be categorized as Europe. And they are probably also distant lands, but yeah, that is arguable.

A good example is probably Madagascar: It is commonly categorized as being in Africa (although that is debatable as well), but with its unique flora and fauna I would classify it as distant lands for mainland Africans.
