LK26 - World Map

The question is not map allowing contact.

The question is with America revealed, does the AI send units to make contact. I have NOT seen a definite answer either way.

Just going by personal experience, every time the AI can see them on the map, they somehow get contact with them in a matter of turns. I would guess that a lot may depend on how much cash the three of them have. they may not be worth milking. It can help a lot sometimes, and I think the bigger the map the more it helps.

To come at the map selling thing from a different direction ...

I have had a "powerful" civ demand contact with the "only known to me" civ at a time when I have not sold a map showing this civ.

So how does the big powerful civ know to demand contact?

@Jersey Joe - Actually this one is easy to explain. If you contact a Civ - you can demand ANYTHING that shows up on the trading screen. Possible contact shows on the trading screen.

@All - Well no matter how we play it - being the first to contact America should help us. We still have ~8 embassies to establish - that alone in several hundred dollars. First contact should get enough cash for all embassies.

I would sell TECH first to the American civs.

If we time the first global map sell when new tech is available - we may get that tech cheap.

One we can get Monarchy - revolt - cash rush is much better then people rush.

We don't look bad at all for the BC time frame. We just need to keep the expansion rush going. The AI generally sucks for taking islands - so once we get there with harbor and barracks to upgrade troops - we should keep for life.

Turn 0 -- 150 BC

Carefully reviewing the situation...
Ok, you traded already, so I won't do it this turn
I'll leave your builds as is :)

Turn 1 -- 130 BC
Canberra finishes Galley, begins Settler--scratch that, Spearman. Galley will wait for Sydney Settler and Canberra Spearman.
Derby finishes Worker, begins Temple

Trade WM for 15 or 16 gold. Monarchy and Republic are out there, but not at last Civ prices.

Turn 2 -- 110 BC
Broome finishes Galley, begins Worker
Freemantle finishes Worker, begins Settler
I establish an embassy with Zululand for 69 (dudes!) gold. Zimbabwe is building a settler despite being size 1 and completing settler/growing to 2 same turn.
All citizens are happy...

Turn 3 -- 90 BC
There's be a lot of Barbarians on these northern islands...
Our galley beats a Barb galley
Brisbane finishes Spear, begins Spear. I send this one to Melbourne, next one to go to Freemantle (should reach there when latter builds Settler)
WM traded for 20 gold...still expensive for Rep/Mon

Turn 4 -- 70 BC
Canberra finishes Spearman, begins Galley
Sydney finishes Settler, begins Spearman
Broome finishes Worker, begins Galley
Darwin finishes Barracks, begins Temple (to get us some culture)

We pop Goody Huy south of Freemantle: Maps! Doh...
We establish Embassy with Rome for 88 Gold...Rome is building a Spearman.

Turn 5 -- 50 BC
Hobart riots? Freemantle riots? I just checked and they were fine... I see my mistake: I thought they were Happy+Unhappy, but they were Content+Unhappy. I raise Luxuries to 20%.
I build Townsville in Tasmania...I was thinking perhaps a tile S due to overlap, but the difference is 4 water tiles overlapping Freemantle but no Fish right away. I choose the Fish.
I order Worker (I work Fish instead of Grasslands for extra commerce and syncronicity)
Scout opens deserted Goody Hut.

WM traded for 30 gold

Turn 6 -- 30 BC
Order restored
Hobart changed to Settler
There appear to be no more islands south of Tasmania
I establish a Embassy with France for 94 gold
They are building a Swordsman in Paris.

I've spotted Siberia...we may discover America soon...

Turn 7 -- 10 BC
Melbourne finishes Settler, begins Galley (feel free to change)
Brisbane finishes Spearman, begins Spearman. I send this Spearman to Darwin.
Perth finishes Barracks, begins Settler
Cairns finishes Temple, begins Worker

There may be another island SE of Australia...
We discover Madagascar!

WM traded for 77 gold

Turn 8 -- 10 AD
Canberra finishes Galley, begins Spearman
Nope, no island SE of Australia...just some coastal water
I establish an Embassy with Egypt for 78 Gold
Thebes is building a Catapult.

I think I've discovered Alaska...nope, just Kamchatka

Freemantle is about to go unhappy, I hire a Tax Collector until Settler completes in 2 turns

Turn 9 -- 30 AD
Zulu is upset we have a Galley near Madagascar...I'll move it.
Hobart completes Settler, begins Worker
Broome finishes Galley, begins Worker
Toowomba is built on New Zealand, Warrior ordered

I've found some land to the SE of Tasmania?

WM traded for over 100 gold (sorry, lost track of exact amount)

The Chinese have Theology!
The price of Monarchy has dropped; it's now available from Joan for 260 gold.

Turn 10 -- 50 AD
Sydney produces Spearman, begins Spearman
Freemantle finishes Settler, begins Temple (feel free to veto)
Babylon is building the Hanging Gardens...which makes perfect sense.

Ok, there's a Settler on a boat SE of Freemantle...he needs a Spearman.
There are two galleys, two settlers (one loaded) and two spearman either already in Canberra or arriving there next turn.

Toowoomba has horsemen approaching...I hope it holds out.

I didn't build any embassies this turn because I wanted to save our cash (now 326 gold) for trading Contacts--just in case we need it. Of course, if next player wants to buy one (or two), go ahead.

Note---I don't think I've discovered Alaska yet...I'm pretty sure that its Kamchatka I'm going around.
As for the island in the extreme SE...Atlantis?

Here's the Save:

WM traded for over 100 gold (sorry, lost track of exact amount)
Wonder why I am pushing maps trading?

I guess this qualifies as before 8:00pm

We are only 14 turns from Monarchy at $1/turn - don't bother trading for Monarchy – unless it is almost free.

@Meldor - Get the gems by Cairns connect - this is the number one priority - should let us cut the luxury rate.
Also, have fun with first contact - suck the money dry from the American continent.

@ChrTh - I realize this isn't a training day game, but
Use our city strengths - Melbourne is a settler / worker factory - why build a galley? Find a different town!
Don’t forget – we still need to fill OUR continent up.

Why wasn't the wheat NW of Sydney irrigated - this is a settler / worker factory and could use another food.

Derby mine - WTH? This city is stuck for growth - it needs IRRAGATION.

Adelaide harbor – Hmmm? How about barracks – with the shield overload there – pump out troops!
We are horrid in the military category.

Turn saver – we have NO military threat – wake up spearman in Brisbane to get him closer to the galley

Also, we need to snag some more luxuries from the northern islands.

Hey, I made it by 15 minutes! And I even left work at 6 :D

Sorry about the mistakes on builds, my head gets turned around sometimes.

Very puzzled over some of the city placement, not places I would have chosen. This is one of the reasons SGs are so much fun. Everyone has different priorities. Why are we clearing forest near cities that can't use the tile while other cities are forced to use unimproved tiles?

50 AD
Change Sydny to settler, Move ciitizens off forest in Melbourne and on to the whale, changed build to settler, growth in 5 settler in 7. Change Freemantle from temple to settler. Feudalism is now available. Galley off coast of Freemantle grabs spear from Townsville and head for New Zealand(?? I guess it slipped south somehow).
I) Perth produces a settler and spear
The Egyptians and Indians start Sun Tsu's AoW.
Toowoomba is assualted by three barb horsemen and we now have an elite spear.

2) 90 AD
Settler from Perth heads west, spear from Brisbane one step behind. Galley from Freemantle goes to safe coast square in middle of ocean. Galley at New Zealand kills on barb galley and then fortifies as there is another barb galley that will attack mid turn.
I) Fortified galley holds off barb attack and is now a vet.

Movement....Establish last embassy until we get contact with Americas.
I) Sydny finishes worker starts settler.
Babs, French, and China start SunTzu's

8) 210 AD
Geelong founded.
Point's East founded.
I) Mao wants us to pay him 100g for his world map, sell him ours for 1g (he just piad 19 for it).
Canberra finishes pike and starts settler.
Holbart finishes worker and starts temple.
Broome finishes barracks and starts pike.
Toowoomba finishes a warrior and starts a temple.

10) Found Silk Passage on top of silk....
Accidentally hit turn end....nothing happened between turns and nothing has been moved...

Save Game

Joan drops price of Republic to 280g, we take it.

 Since we are going for Monarchy with Domination - why buy Republic?

:goodjob: - Embassy pass completed for known civs

Jersey Joe (currently playing)
How about this BEFORE LK22 - this one is much shorter - you should get first contact in America- A key money making turn
Dark Sheer (on deck)
D9phoenix

ARGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG
Some beat us to America. However, not much trading of contact.
Jersey Joe - this turn is a major trading turn.
Egypt KNOWS America - so trade all contacts this turn, or we won't get the money for it!
I was playing around - we can get Theology for Contact with the new world! I think it will net several hundred dollars for us.

As for playing different - my choice for Newcastle, worker then Harbor - We could really use the 2nd luxury.

It looks like Australia - V2 - needs a horse source.

Gems in 8 turns :)

Having republic gives us more options as to what government we care to be in. I normally go to monarchy and then switch to republic when I get aenough native lux resources and marketplaces in key cities to deal with war weariness. Even with a non-religious civ the switch can be worth it.

[EDIT] Also, I didn't do diplo the last turn as I was going to leave that to the next player, but then I mistakenly hit the next turn. If Egypt got contact, they just got it as they didn't have it on the 9th turn of my reign.

@meldor - hmmm...
does make sense now. However, once we are in heavy domination mode I suspect ww would bring down our govement even in Republic.

Well JJ gets fun now - the massive trade turn.
Since we could ship Egypt iron - will workers finally show up?
We have a massive amount of terrain to improve - plus those islands we are claim come with a lot of jungle

Go Jersey Joe - first turn - trade your brains out
That first turn should be a killer.

Hint - Mabye buy contact with America from Egypt to start?

Gee, think something is stuck on my Brain? :D
I think the greed gene has kicked in. :p

@Meldor - I would believe it on contact - why I tend to check at least every other turn. I barely caught China / Germany getting contact with Japan. A couple more turns and I would have gained nothing.

I agree Lee, but even 10-20 turns under Republic, whipping units or improvements with the extra cash can make a big difference.

We can get a third native lux online at Silk Passage if we do tghe same as Lee suggests for Newcastle.

Also, I would suggest landing a spear first on the islands overrun by barbs, let him fortify, take what damage we will and then put the settler down. I almost made a mistake at Silk Passage, as when I checked it looked like only one Horseman could attack. I put both off, and lo and behold, the spear had 5 horsemen attack him before he could fortify. He did promote, but was still left with only 2 HPs. I got really lucky I didn't cost us a settler there.

Extra cash - exactly why my obession on the contact trading with America.

I also have a rush target - the island south of Australia with Iron - rush temple, build worker to iron, rush harbor. More resources to sell.

I can't remember - if you we are NOT in Monarchy yet -
:goodjob: I vote with Meldor choice - Republic. We still have a ton of islands to claim - no sense in war for a while.

There is also iron on the island directly to the north. That will give us three sources to trade, or two and a spare. Iron is oine resource that the AI will pay through the nose to get. I sold it to Cleo because she is too far away to hurt us with any units she can build with iron, and she paid dearly for it.

I agree with republic over monarchy. Monarchy like communism should only be used as a last resort. Even 5 turns under republic would be extremely helpful.

I actually tend to wage very long wars with Democracy, and if i have to i switch back to republic. I will usually only use monarchy if all the techs have been researched and money isn't an issue any more.

Okay I will shop till I drop and see about moving us into a republic.

We were a republic in lk25 and where at war for many turns and WW did not seem like a problem.
