Looks like Civ 6 is done: Kevin called April "final game update"

I would go with the update video and say they ment "last update of the season". Sure they may not intend to make another update for Civ VI but the video statement don't mean they have to make another update, it mean they could make another update. Also the video is likely reviewed in some way before released to avoid larger errors while a comment on social media is likely not as reviewed.

For all we know, the last update of the season could mean the last Free Update of Spring. :P

Not sure what all the fuss is about. You'll know development on Civ 6 is done when they release the dll.

I would be surprised if they came out with a "Frontier Pass 2.0" at this stage in development. I would be in favour of an expansion which includes an expanded tech tree so that it would be more in line with Civ 5's, but at least they're going to fill in some of the unit gaps in the April update. Other than more Civs, I don't know what else would warrant more DLC content; we're already pretty lucky, considering how much more content there is in CIV VI now, compared to its predecessor when Brave New World released.

I don’t get why anyone would think that. The Civ 4 and Civ 5 dlls came out pretty early in their development cycles (1st year of Civ 4 and before BNW for Civ 5).
Clearly not comparable so not sure what the relevance is?

When Kevin was asked about the emphasis on the word season on the Reddit-thread about the update, he claimed it is only the way he speaks. This, combined with the tweets and social media posts leads me to think that this could be the final update, barring some bug fixes etc. I certainly hope I am wrong, as there are still plenty of interesting things to be added and some larger issues to be solved.

I think more content is still 50:50.

Kevin and Firaxis haven’t ruled out more content; but they haven’t ruled it in either. There’s still a lot more that could be added to the game, and it’s certainly set up for more content to be added whether it’s additional game modes or persona packs or whatever; but there is also already a lot in game. Civ 6 and it’s expansions and season pass have sold really well; but Firaxis as a business may also want to devote more resources to other IP rather than more Civ 6 content.

Like I said. I think more content is 50:50. If anyone’s asking, yeah, I’d still like to see more content, and I’m happy to pony up the cash. But I also recognise its Firaxis’ call, so we’ll just have to see what happens.

Pretty much everything that's been said that's been used as evidence that Civ VI is finishing next week is quite compatible with it not ending too, at least the things that I've seen. Saying "final game update" could, in the context, just be meant to be "final game update [for this batch]".

It should also be noted that another season pass is economically indicated. Civ VII is almost certainly delayed and a season pass wouid bring in wanted money while they wait. Further, NFP did very well, they'd want to capitalise on that.

There have been things said that, the way they're worded, only really make sense if there is potential for another season, for example references to "this season" only really make sense if there is a "that season", if only in potential.

Conclusions:
  1. I think it's fair to say that further content has most likely not been ruled out at Firaxis, or at least those who created the script for the videos believe that is haven't ruled it out.
  2. Said content, planned or potential, is probably in the form of a season pass.
  3. This is more speculative, but the purpose of how they're doing it is probably for one of two reasons:
    1. To see what the reaction is and judge from that whether it would be well received.
    2. To stoke up discussion like this thread to build up excitement. Have you seen how popular the NFP update discussion threads have been, both in the run up to and after each update announcement and release? Even this thread.
I wouldn't like to put odds on new content actually coming out, but it's reasonable to conclude that it's been not ruled out. I

I would hazard a guess that with the coming pass at rebalancing all the civs means our work here is "Done". I don't like that...but it is my GUESS given the history of past such "final" all-encompassing balancing adjustments. My thought is that newer game mechanics such as those found in humankind have probably opened up directional developer conversations to the point of "let's just start work on 7."
He did not say it is the final update - he said it is the final update in this season.....

Somehow I have feeling that this season update was worked by some small/part of Civ team, and not whole. Maybe they split, one already working full time on Civ 7, and another lets say junior part working on Civ 6 second season.

I think most people have assumed that. We know Anton spearheaded NFP. Given the relatively new faces we’ve seen in all the videos and the fact that Dennis and Ed Beach are largely absent (except maybe the very first video) it seems very likely to most people that they’re working on VII at the same time while Anton drives NFP (and of course contributes to VII given how senior he is).

Unfortunately it’s also evident that Firaxis’s focus is divided due to the quality slips we’ve been seeing with bugs and glitches. NFP content has been great but as someone here once pointed out, “the seams are showing.”

I think the deliberate "talking out of both sides of their mouth" tells me that additional content has not been ruled out. However, I would anticipate that additional content won't be base game content, but maybe more of these "game modes" that take the base engine, but a new game out of it. Me hopes for a space based type game mode (It would be too much to wish for another Alpha Centauri).

(1) Sid Meier's Civilization on Twitter: " The final FREE update is coming to Civilization VI on April 22! Watch the developers share their vision. https://t.co/4H838ScLLf" / Twitter

In the update video he says "...final free update of the SEASON"

Maybe Firaxis+2K are toying with the idea of more content for Civ VI? IDK
I'm afraid that the tweet description takes precedence in regards to importance. The dev update video was probably made a little bit earlier than it was released, and by this time some definitive decisions may have been made.

just curious, why it's not comparable ?
As he said, the dll's were released early in their development cycles. I don't think anyone is making a case of Civ 6 being in an early stage of its development cycle. The fact that they didn't release the dll at a similar stage points to the (at this point very high) probability of them releasing it at the end of the cycle instead.

I think the question is why are you assuming they are going to release it at all?

My memory isn't what it used to be, I think I remember seeing on here about a year ago that someone (maybe Anton?) said there was no plan to release it.

There was an interview in which one of the developers said that they didn't currently have plans to release it. That doesn't mean no, though. It might still happen. If it definitely wasn't going to happen, they'd probably have told us as much.
