LotR 2 - Zealous Zulus (Monarch variant)

I did get caught up in the RBD civ-2 game. I looked back and thought about grabbing this game, but by that time arathorn had posted, and I thought you'd pick it up, Sirian. This game, like most succession games approaching victory, has become a matter of grinding, and so not quite as urgent as before.

My CD screwup thing has left my dad's computer totally out for Civ, which was where I played the first bit of my turn. I should have emailed it off to myself, so I could pick it up and play it out, but I was thinking I'd just call it off at 4 turns, and pass the game on, since that would put me over the limit. Sorry if I wasn't clear about that; I considered this game back in circulation, and I guess I don't check as thoroughly as I used to that things are going to schedule.

Sorry if this has caused yet further consternation.

Jester

I've got the game. Probably will take the whole 3 days because the turns have become longer now and I'm a little behind on work after having been away for 5 days.

I noticed that we can now build destroyers and transports. I think I will push research until we can build tanks. Taking a cue from Arathorn I think my goals will be to conquer everyone on our continent, build our first tank, and possibly invade Egypt.

I had a lightening strike cut power to my house last night and lost all my previous turns and writeup. Today I had time to do only 3 turns and a skimpy writeup. Sorry about that.

The Russians are wiped out and I made some progress on the Greeks, cutting them into 2 pieces and capturing Sparta and razing Pharsalos. We’re building destroyers now, although none have seen combat yet.

I pushed research to max level to get tanks ASAP. I think we’re 5 turns away from getting them, and we’re about 2 techs ahead of everyone else.

1778AD Preturn: I change all ironclad orders to destroyers. Also change Neapolis on the northern coast to destoyer and buy it for about 450 gp. It will help get rid of the annoying bombarding ironclads on the northern coast and it is the nearest city with a harbor. Later it can escort a tranport to get the little island with 3 Roman cities and an Iro city in the east.

I also push full bore on research to get to tanks ASAP. We now have Mass Production in 4 turns at –34 gpt.

1778-1780AD We build a ton of stuff. Cumae goes into revolt because I didn’t check it. Also lost some uncovered workers to a Greek cav, because I didn’t see that it could get there. People add on to the palace.

1780AD We capture Sparta, splitting the Greeks into 2 parts. Finally Riga, the Russian capital is captured and razed. The Russians are wiped out.

1782AD Get setup for attacks on 2 other Greek cities. First destroyers go out to look for ironclads to kill.

1784AD Pharsalos falls. Lots of troop and artillery movement. Mass Production only 1 turn away and then its time for Motorized Transport.

Notes:

The western pocket of Greeks has 4 cities left, the east pocket has 10 cities left. There are forces aimed at reducing both of these pockets.

Also I put Grozny, our city near the little east island with Roman and Iro cities to building a transport. At the right time it can be bought and then protected by the destroyer coming down the coast to invade the island.

Here's the game.

My CD is cracked, which is apparently why it didn't work before, and now doesn't work at all. I'm going to have to replace it. Until that gets done, I'm Civ-Paralyzed.

So, consider me on perma-skip in all my games until then.

Jester

Regarding the lightning strike, autosave is activated unless you specifically are turning it off for your turn. Couldn't you have reloaded from the beginning of the turn when power went out?

Jester: Sorry to hear about your CD. That happen in transit? All that shuffling back and forth? Do you anticpate being able to replace it within, say, a month? Or is this an indefinite thing?

- Sirian

When I got the CD, it appeared to have a small hairline running across the plastic ring in the middle of it. I figured it was just some trivial thing, but it apparently was a crack down the middle. It's just been slowly growing with use, and it's spread into the readable part of the CD.

In addition to these games, I also have a game with the Persians on Emperor that I was addicted to. So this had better not be an indefinite thing. ;-)

It shouldn't take me more than a week or so to get a new CD, by hook or by crook.

Well guys – it’s been fun but these will be my last ten turns for sometime. My wife and I will be inducing labor for our first son or daughter on Wednesday and I will not be playing the rest of this game. And since the game is nearly over, this would be a good time to bow out. Even if everyone took a full ten turns, I’d still only have one turn left – not a big deal. This has really been a cool format for a game and Arathorn, thanks for inviting me to the party. I’ll still be lurking around for a while – just going to bow out of playing for a bit as my priorities are going to change a bit.

Executive summary – Greeks, Romans, and Iroquois have been destroyed. Founded about a dozen, maybe 15 new cities. Took 11 turns, sorry - wanted to at least get Thebes before I finished. Five great leaders.

1786AD – Motorized Transportation in 4 turns at –169gpt. Founded New Bapedi 2 to fill in some of the culture gaps in the Old Russian territory (or was it Greek?) Anyhow – we built a ton of cavalry and about three destroyers this turn. We can build battleships and carriers now as well, but my thinking at this point is quantity over quality since we’re ahead in the tech lead. My guess is we’ll not have to deal with anything bigger than ironclads - so for now, destroyers it is. Destroyed Greek city of Gandasetalgon and got a great leader in the process. Sent the leader to Grozny and rushed a transport there (never thought I’d rush a transport with a leader). Destroyed Herakleia and sent the five Greek workers there to clean pollution deep in Zulu territory. Rushed a destroyer along the Greek coast to prevent any Greek ships from destroying our improvements. Founded New Hlobane 2 on the Russian north coast. Captured the city of Knossos – didn’t raze it though, we’ll see if this pays off. Snagged a Greek worker (ha)

1788AD – Founded New Isand 2 as a step off point for an attack on Corinth and Argos. Captured Corinth without too much effort. Captured Mycenae and got another great leader. (Just thought of this – a battleship would be terrific for excess great leaders) Sent the leader to the western coast and rushed a battleship. Captured Argos. War is progressing as planned. Navy on the western coast is growing in size.

1790AD – People expand the palace. Destroyed Greek city of Maikop. Formerly Maikop founded on the former site. Founded New Intombe 2 to fill in more of the gaps. Founded New Mpondo 2 on the northeastern coastline. Destroyed the city of Delphi on the coastline. Founded New Ngome 2 near the Delphi site. Shifted remaining troops and artillery into more advantageous positions. Tanks in 2! (yeah baby)

1792AD – Rushed three temples in the Greek front area. Treasury is seriously depleted from our research escapades, so next turn (after discovery of MT) I’ll work on the rebuilding of it. Captured and razed Ephesus and another great leader appears. Leader sent to Swazi and another battleship is rushed. Founded New Swazi 2 on the old Ephesus city site. St. Regis captured and destroyed! The ole war machine keeps churning… Destroyed the city of Rhodes and received another great leader! Sent him to Mpondo to rush another battleship. I guess you can get more than one great leader per turn! Founded Was Rhodes on the old Rhodes site (duh). Captured Athens!! We now control the Oracle! We also captured the Greek city of Thermopylae! Oy! We have extra artillery left over at least a dozen or more so we bombard the mass of Aztec and Egyptian ships to our western coast. That’s a bit easier than wrecking our ships, no? Ran the numbers at Ulundi – cultural victory in 42 turns. We’re going to be cutting it close since we have to transport all our troops. However on the bright side – I’ve practically destroyed the Greeks in 4 turns, so who knows?

1794AD – We finally have MT! Switched a dozen or more cities over to Tank production. Most lie in the core cities and are producing at three or four turns. Captured Thessalonica and razed it – the Greeks are destroyed! (Good riddance) Dumped 8 infantry and 8 artillery on the Roman/Iroquois island (and got the transports back to Grozny for safekeeping). Founded New Tugela 2 at the former St. Regis site. Started organizing the assault parties and transport assignments. Going to send a stack of three settlers, eight Zulu workers (since we’re unsure of the Egyptian lay of the land), and assorted infantry and artillery. There are plenty more transports on the way as well – the first wave of tanks won’t be far behind. Impi armies moved to Ulundi and Zimbabwe for symbolic purposes – sort of like the USS Constitution. We’re keeping at least one infantry in each coastal city in the event of an amphibious assault – more than one in cities which are in hot areas. Jacked the science rate back to 0% (+1030gpt)

1796AD – Tanks galore! Let the offensive begin (when we get there). Rushed three transports in various cities. Loaded up the transports in Viroconium (renamed to Zulu Docks). Sent off (for starters) 16 infantry, 8 artillery, 5 tanks, and 3 settlers (with an escort of one battleship and 6 destroyers. We can land on the Egyptian mainland in two turns from Zulu Docks, and there is 11 squares total between Zulu Docks and Memphis. We can get a real assembly line going to the Aztecs. Opened up the guns on Byzantium (they have riflemen and legions guarding the city). Byzantium is ours! Decided not to raze since we have no settlers in the area (who cares – we’re not going to get any production this far away anyhow). Sank several Aztec and English ships with no losses. Dropped off five tanks and three infantry near the last Iroquois city (they have spearmen). Going to secure this island and leave a small force of troops so we can forget about it.

1798AD – Ganogeh is captured! (Last Iroquois city) and they are destroyed (good riddance again). Romans battling valiantly (but poorly) against overwhelming odds near their capital. Another leader is produced and loaded onto a transport for eventual travel to either Memphis or the west coast of Zulu. Brundisium captured! Romans are definitely on the run now. Dropped off the SOD near Memphis – first goal is to gain a foothold, second is to clean up the remaining Egyptian cities.

1800AD – 15 or so tanks produced at the start of this turn. Lugdunum captured! The Romans are destroyed. Our tanks rumble into Memphis and raze the city!! Oy! New Umtata 2 is founded and a library is immediately rushed as the Egyptian culture is completely surrounding our city. Rushed another battleship with the great leader.

1802AD – Here come the Egyptians!! SOD moves in toward our newest city – we rush a barracks this turn, next turn we need to rush a harbor. Pick off a couple of infantry in the area and soften others up with the artillery. We’ve got a bit of a shipping route going at this point – five transports are going to be rolling into New Umtata 2 (renamed to Zulu Foothold) next turn. Rushed a few temples in the boonies. Set one taxman to a scientist in Zimbabwe (Flight in 36).

1804AD – Rushed the harbor in Zulu Foothold. Egyptian SOD took a beating at the hands of our infantry. We lost a few destroyers due to Aztec aggression – not what I had hoped for; we’re going to have to build some more offensive ships. Dropped off the five transports worth of troops – time to go on the offensive before our city flips. Moved our own SOD within range of Thebes. Just like the cat said when it’s tail got stuck in the fan, “it won’t be long now”. Thank you, drive safely.

1806AD – Many more tanks produced this turn. Our Harbor in Zulu Foothold has been completed and the spices around the city are now being exported to the homeland. Aztec activity near the old Roman island – may have to move some more troops in that direction. Thebes is captured and razed!! We get about 12 Egyptian workers to boot – I would guess the foothold in Egypt is secure.

Notes:

There are about six empty transports within range of the mainland. You may want to escort these, as there are plenty of Aztec ironclads in the area. There are two settlers on the Egyptian mainland and we’re going to need more. There’s a stack of fortified artillery near Zulu Docks. I’ve slowly been moving them across the channel (and using them to attack ships that get too close.) May want to leave these on the mainland. There may be a few workers on goto, sorry. Was using group movements a lot.

And here’s the game -

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads/lotr2-1806AD.zip

Again – it’s been a pleasure playing this game with your guys. Quite enjoyable from an “edge of you seat” standpoint for the first few millennia. I’ll be checking in from time to time to see how things are going.

Congrats Toecheese! I too am expecting 1st child- but not until October. I'm trying to get as much Civ in as possible until its too late :)

Great job on this game guys. I have been reading this thread for a while and this was definitely one of the ones that prompted me to join some SGs!

Congrats, Toecheese. I remember well going in to have my wife induced with our first child. Number Two should appear any day now. I just hope to get a couple games finished up by then. Thanks for joining us for this game.

I got the game and will play within my 72 hours. I'm pretty busy, so I might not get in the full 10.

Arathorn

Thanks guys, it's pretty exciting. Kinda disappointed that my Civ quotient will be declining - but there's more to life than Civ. :)

Toecheese3: It's been fun playing with you. I applaud your priorities and fully support your choice to bow out and cut back on gaming. The most important thing you can ever give to your kids is support, and beyond feeding them and keeping them safe, that means giving them your time. You'll be well rewarded for it.

If SG's are too much time pressure, but you still have a little time for some Civ here or there, maybe tournament style play would better suit you. You're welcome to sneak in over at RBCiv for some action of that sort if you care to.

Take care, and may your baby be healthy and your wife safe.

"To everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven."

This season saw this news:
lotr2-egypt_destroyed.jpg

We also discovered Flight and are nearing Espionage (to steal Radio from the Aztecs, if we so desire).

On the homelands, all is safe and well. We have tons of pollution and I have a fair chunk of workers on Shift-P patrol, just to warn you. We gets lots of the orange goo every turn. Others are working on more jungle clearing.

There were a couple landings on the homeland, but they were taken care of quickly. One on east island was a bit more problematic, but not too bad. English ships still sneak through and bombard occasionally.

There are currently four fronts:

1. Water front. We have superior numbers and superior ships, but we can't find enough enemies to destroy every turn. The SE is the least defended and English ships prey on our shores occasionally.

2. Eastern Aztecia front. We have one city, but it's former Aztec (captured so I could immediately unload troops and speed the landing beachhead). Two settlers and probably 100+ troops in various locations. I expect a serious counterpunch here next turn, as I had to leave some wounded tanks undefended. The counterstrike will perish quickly, though. Should be able to raze one major city next turn, finally giving some culture-free zone.

This is where I would expect to see the major battles waged.

3. Western Aztecia front. More of a diversionary tactic. We have one captured city here, with a mere 8 units defending it. No walls, no barracks. Its purpose was to help the eastern front land more successfully. I would be surprised if we survive on this front.

4. Western Island front. We had to land here to get the last two Egyptian cities. The English have a few cities on this island, but it should be easy to capture -- probably with troops on hand. After the capture, they may just need to defend.... Nobody has good supply lines here.

I believe I left one leader on the eastern Aztecia front. I couldn't get him anywhere on my turn. He might well be best used rushing an airport.... Not my call, though.

Sirian is up now.
cpp1 is on deck.

Jester, I'm awaiting news on CD before putting you back into the line-up. Toecheese is hopefully the father of a healthy baby -- and, as such, has much higher priorities.

Arathorn

Great progress Arathorn! It looks like it will be close between conquest, domination, or culture. Sorry I haven't been active lately. I am swamped at work and haven't had much free time.

I had to finish a project before this weekend in preparation for leaving on another trip tomorrow and will be gone until Sunday 6/16 so I'll probably have to miss my turn this round.

I checked later after the lightening strike and it turns out I did have autosave on, but I was upset about losing everything so I forgot about it. It's a good lesson for later.

In case the game finishes before I get back, I just want to say its been great playing with you guys. I have learned alot and its been an exciting game. The ending is dragging a little with long turns, the game being basically won, and people being busy. However, the beginning and middle could not be beat for awesome fun, white knuckle excitement, and wondering if you're going to survive the next 10 turns or not. Thanks for a wonderful game.

Welp... I thumped on the Aztecs a bit. Then a bit more. Then some more, and more. Then my second turn came. ;) That's when they really started gettin some.

lotr2-victory.jpg

After seven turns, they cried uncle. No more fun for me! :(

No more fun for anybody!

This was a great idea, Arathorn. :) This game had a unique feel to it, more differentiated from all other civ3 play than any other variant I've played. We'll give this concept a spin soonish in the Epics, probably once again on Monarch, as this thing felt at times like a Deity game!

Thanks for having me, all. Here's the final layout:

lotr2-final-map.jpg

LotR2 - 1840AD - Victory File

Sorry for the early finish. It came upon me rather unexpectedly. :) We had about 17ish turns to spare before 20k culture @Ulundi.

- Sirian

BTW... before the end, I wiped out the Aztecs major SOD of about 200-250 troops, mostly infantry, plus another mini-SoD without about 50 in it, most infantry, and one English mini-Sod without about 50 in it, mostly infantry.

I was poised to thump a few more cities and had another wave of our settlers coming in soon. I'd built an airport early on plus a bunch more at home, and that made troop inflow steady. We could have reached conquest, I believe, although it would have been a tight fit indeed.
