Lots of heavy discussion here...

Great timing for this. I just replaced my 99 Escort. I had planned on getting a 2002-3 Taurus or Sable, 2002-3 Sonata, or 2002 Century or LeSabre. However, I saw this 99 Chrysler LHS in awesome shape and low mileage at a great price and couldn't resist. The mpg is lower than I'd like, and it's older than I had planned, but I've also never had a car with all the extras this thing has. I simply love it.

Biking is the way to go here, a mountain bike atm, but considering switching to a less fancy but better bike, but it's high demand for those around here...

Gonna drive a Volvo S60 for the summer, apparently with an iPod docking station:)

Beside the sonata the rest are really awfull choices.
Didn't your mama tell you? American can't make decent cars.
An asian or an European will always give you more.

I drive a Hyundai Accent 2001 3 door hatchback!

*Snort* Please. The only reason the Sonata was even on the list was because of the 10 year/100K warranty. Sure, I could spend twice as much and have gotten the same amount of creature comforts I got with my choice, but then I'd have had to spend twice as much, wouldn't I? Give me Buick, Ford or Chrysler any day over Honda, Toyota, etc.

Then american cars must be cheaper in the US then here.

I could probably get a nice Accord for the same price then a Taurus. And a Sentra SeR for less then a Buick Century.

I'll have to check this out, it would explain everything.

Ford and Chrysler make crummy vehicles. If I had to buy a domestic, I would go GM, but I would much rather have a VW or a Toyota.

I'd swear this is a weekly topic. I drive a crimson 1991 3.0 Liter V6 Ford Probe. But I'll drive whatever you'll give me the keys to, automatic, manual, doesn't matter to me.

My Probe has close to 150k miles on it with no engine problems, ever. I only replace the stuff that all cars need to replace (tires, oil, etc). To be honest, I beat the hell out of this car, and it keeps on clickin. The car I owned before this was a 1990 Chrysler Fifth Avenue, another car with close to 135k miles on it, no problems until something happened to, what we thought was the transmission. Didn't bother to figure out what, but my guess would have been the solenoid, and those wear out just like anything else. Man that car was awesome, it had freakin power everything.

I honestly prefer Chevy's, but with my financial state, I'll drive about anything. Though it would pain me greatly to drive an import, because I am a hardcore believer in "Buying American". I grant you American cars aren't what they used to be, but I still prefer those to imports as most of the money I pay for it stays in the United States and doesn't get sent to Germany or Japan or whatever. While I grant you many parts are made overseas, the majority of the money stays here, and I try to help out my fellow Americans.

I in no way am trying to say that imported cars are of lesser quality, I just prefer American made. That's just the way I am. I won't try to change your views, please don't try to change mine.

My relatives also have had bad experiences with Toyotas, 3 relatives own (well owned) Toyotas, and bi-annually they needed maintenence work done on them. Something always seemed to break. But, they may just have bad luck.

as for looks ...Dodge gets my vote!

I agree with tankGuy, stick with your principles, heck I f I would be American I would buy american. Im canadian so I buy Asian. :D

My car works like a charm .... 2001 Accents are better that the same 2002 model. Less breakage. :)

My friend's 2003 accent is the worst piece of crap I have ever seen in my life. he changes his breaks every 30 000 clics and I could go on all day about stupid stuff he had to change. Wiper engine, exhaust lines a couple of time, windshield washer tank (WTH???), speedometer, he actually got a ticket for doing 136 kmh and his monitor showed 129!

I dont know if he was just unlucky but the car is banned for life in my case.

Well, one thing that comes into play here is that I don't usually buy new cars, but a few years (and in this case 7) old. The imports do frequently hold their resale value better than domestics.

However, I decided to check. Unfortunately, 2005 was the last year for both the Taurus and the Century, so I looked up what the invoice and MSRP values were for those in 2005 as well as the 2005 Sentra and Accords. Invoice is what manufacturers charge dealerships, MSRP is what manufacturers suggest dealers sell them for.

2005 Ford Taurus
SE Invoice = $19,243
SE MSRP = $21,200

SEL Invoice = $20,961
SEL MSRP = $23,130

2005 Buick Century
Hrm. They don't show the "Custom" and "Limited" that it always had. I guess they just had one trim this last year.
Invoice = $22,040
MSRP = $20,167

2005 Honda Accord
Too many trims to mess with. Click this MSN Auto link for details.
Invoice ranged from: $17,890 - $26,045
MSRP ranged from: $19,875 - $28,950

2005 Nissan Sentra
Wow, okay it is definitely lower by several thousand. But then again, it is only a 4 cylinder vehicle, so it isn't really comparable with the V-6s.

hehe, this is where many people fall, its not the number of cylinders that matter, but how they are built and assembled. The SE-R specV has a 4 cyclinder DOHC 2.5L 175HP engine. that combined to the fact that its a lot lighter then the Century (and its 190HP V-6) gives it way better performances. the MSRP is a couple thousand more then the standard Sentra but at 18300$ MSRP its imo one of the best buy on the market right now.

You might loose some comfort, but then its a matter of what you like best: comfort or performances?

Well, I drove a 2.0 L DOHC 4 cylinder for 7 years. I have to say the engine noise is much quieter at 70mph with a V-6 thrumming along at 2,100rpm than it is with an I-4 screaming along at 3,100rpm.

I'm getting older and I want creature comforts. :)

I'm not old enough to drive. I used to drive my bike but... it got stolen! So I don't drive anything. I'll be getting a new bike soon though because I love bikes.

When I'm old enough I'd love to get a Chevy Cobalt.

Same here no car, never had one, don't need one; luxury of living in a county where I don't have to drive, it's heaven, the amount of *****ing people do about their clapped out old bangers is a real turn off. They're designed specifically to last 10 years max, what do you expect :D
