My comnputer's fan has never been loud. It has always been nice a soft, and normal. But just recently, it acting screwy and loud. Usually if that happened I would just hit it, but that doesn't work anymore. Help anyone?

Before you melt your processor when it fails ....

...or it could be that the fan has become detatched from your processor, and is flying about inside your tower as we speak :) (when I was working in a computer making/repair shop a guy brought in his tower and said it was making funny noises, we turned it on, and opened it up. The fan was just flying about inside  )

It costs a few bucks for a new fan. If you have a reasonably fast processor then if the fan fails you're processor will be damaged pretty rapidly by the heat build up. That may cost you hundreds of bucks.

Ditch the fan and get a new one.

That happens to mine about every 6 months... What you can do is re-lubricate it.

Peel the sticker off of the middle of the fan. Underneath that you'll find a little clear sticky plastic round disc. Lift that up and underneath that will be the axle mechanism of the fan blade. Spray a little bit of WD40 right in there... (or any similar substance -- 3 in 1 oil etc... Whatever you can safely get in that little hole - WD40 works well because of the long spout on the can). Then replace the clear seal peice and then the sticker. Should be good as new.

Or you can replace the fan. :)

It is grinding, or sounds like that.....

I once had a loose wire interfering with the fan which made that sound. Look inside the case. If that's not it, buy another fan.

I've also had the screws that attach the fan to the CPU loosen up - at which time the fan itself can rattle against the Heat Sink

I had that happen to my other computer, only it sounded like a lawn mower. It turned out that the ball bearings were broken, and I wound up having to use my huge window fan to blow air into it for the time being.

I've had this problem as well for a god while. I ended up screwing it loose to check if something was loose on the inside. When screwing it back again I couldnt do it right I think cause it kept vibrating and making really loud noises. I just removed the screws and taped it thight instead. :D

Should probably look into buying a new one...

Ok, I'll follow your advice. My computer is 2.4 GhZ, so I don't want something to happen that will cost me alot of money.
it kinda depends on what type of processor you have and what motherboard.

AMD ones can melt and catch on fire and stuff, but my motherboard turns off if the processor is too hot. pentium ones will just slow down i think, not catch on fire etc :)

Once had a friend who made his own computer, and used a card-board box as the casing. It ended up burning!
