I have a huge rpoblem with my computer..it just wont start up. Sometimes when it turns on it says something along the lines of lsass.exe error..Secure accoint identification or something has failed..error status 0xc0000078 and to restart in safe mode, when i do though..it does the same thing. And sometimes it doesnt even start up..Help, i really need this fixed..my final is due in 3 days and the only copy is on the comp. speedo..any ideas?

and im posting from another comp 4 your info

I really hate that error.
I usually re-install my OS when it happens.
I recommend calling tech support.

Boot from your windows CD and go to the recovery console. Try extracting lsass.exe from the i386 folder on your CD to replace the one currently there.

If that doesn't work you might try doing a repair install of windows.

Beyond that I don't have any other ideas. If you just need your file though, you can always pull the drive and hang it on another comp to grab it.

ah, thanks speedo..is there anything else i should do before i replace the file? and would it delete my accounts?

Just a thought - it's not a sasser variant (worm from 2004) ? Presumably you've got reasonably up-to-date virus checker & MS patches (incl. MS04-044 or MS04-011) - if you haven't then it might be worth googling for sasser or lsass and trying one of the de-infect tools.

It comes with the computer, so nothing wrong with it.
Please allow me to vent at you..
I know the file comes with the computer and i know there's normally nothing wrong with it! But when it gives you an error and doesnt allow you to go farther than the log on screen there's definitely something wrong with it! And it doesnt matter..Speedo gave me some ideas that i will try ASAP:mad:

You can just go ahead and extract it. Doing that will just replace the file.
Doing a repair install basically does an upgrade. It won't lose anything, but IIRC you'll have to re-enter your product key, reactivate windows and may have to reinstall some drivers.

I don't really know what the problem would be, unless the actually lsass.exe just became corrupted somehow. We're really flying blind until you can at least get into safe mode and check event viewer.

safe mode does the same thing though. and i cant set the boot device to the cdrom drive since somewhy the bios has a password and i dont know it...so i shall fix this as soon as i can get access to another comp

and how do you get to the event viewer?

Pull out the motherboard's manual and find the CMOS reset jumper (or button). Or in some cases, there's a seperate jumper for the CMOS password.

For event viewer, Start>Run and enter eventvwr.msc
Assuming that you have Win2k or better.

ah..thanks. and one more thing..you said that on the win 2000 cd there's a copy of lsass.exe? i cant find it..im gonna risk repair installation though so no need to answer that. Im just rambling on

It will be under the i386 folder, and will be named lsass.ex_
You have to use the "extract" command from the recovery console to extract it... I'm not sure of the exact syntax for that command, but enter "help extract" and it should tell you how to use it.

k then, none of the given solutions has worked and ive just gotten win xp so ill just reinstall. i managed to pull my final off the hd so no worries there. anyways thanks for all your help speedo
