I'm working fast today. There might be one more round today, then that's most likely it. Anywho, we gain 3 vassals, 2 of them, you wouldn't expect.
I begin the round by accepting Mehmed and having him kiss the serpent on the hat.
I gift him a load of techs to have him up to speed. Being at war with Russia does that to ya, as well as losing your capital.
We bribe Julius Caesar into a war against Pericles. Why? Well, diplo points. It's all about the diplo points.
And we begin to start sucking up to the Dutch. Why? Well, if I vassal him, I might choose to shrine his holy city which HALF THE WORLD ADHEARS to. That is A LOT of money. He'd vassal to me, except he's not at a high enough happy level with me.
With a few minor adjustments(I had already played the round before I read that really helpful post) to my civics, I regret it the next turn when Zara drops off 8 units at Yemen!
To make a long story short, I lose Mecca for 2 turns yet I keep Medina. Dumb Zara, you don't split a tiny stack when in hostile territory. Oh, and we trade for scientific method with the Portuguese.
And being Big Jew actually helps us, a lot! We vote(and pass) to have everybody DOW on Zara. Hello diplo points.
Oh, and then Julius Caesar shows up proposing this. How can I refuse? The more vassals the better at this point, because that means less war for me to handle.
We trade for some Silver, which is really just a filler trade, but we also trade for military tradition with JC. He's actually gaining a tech lead. We also trade for corporation with Boudica.
Isabella makes a demand, which we agree to. I hope to eventually convert her back to Judaism and possibly vassalize her through friendship. We also agree to another one of her demands to stop trading with Russia. He's going to be the next boogeyman in my quest to vassalize Europe through friendship.
Then she asks me to DOW on Sumer, and therefore Boudica. No chance in hell.
Conveniently, we also finally knock Saladin out of his last viable city location. It'll take him forever to build a worker at the Philippines, so he's toast. I start a galleon in one of my Persian cities along with a frigate. I want to kill someone dammit!
Boudica decides to be so kind as to trade us Steel. Score another point against Zara's chances of beating me at war.
With nothing better to do in the AP, we decide to have everybody DOW on Pericles as well for the kicks and giggles.
We also hand the Ottomans more techs to keep them somewhat at tech parity, and, Pericles is officially screwed.
Joao finally decides to be smart and join the family. He vassalizes to me as well. Thinking about it, should I vassalize Zara instead of chasing him to Madagascar?
And to top the round, we take Zara's first city which was filled with 20+ units. Hurrah for a clean sweep through Zaraland!
So now, I'm at a pivotal point. I can take all of Zara's continental cities+ Sri Lanka and then vassalize him to Madagascar and a city in Australia, or I can kill him entirely. Or I can let him off easy, like Giggles, and let him vassalize to whoever he chooses all the way down in Australia.
But then comes the big ??????. Shaka has a crapload of units heading towards Western Sahara, meaning most of his cities are relatively lightly guarded. I'm almost guaranteed to get the Great Spy from Communism, so I can have him infiltrate Shaka and then plan for war from there. Do I kill Shaka entirely? He has a colony in South America, btw. Or do I take the cities I want and then vassalize him? Shaka WILL harass my cities in West Africa, but he can also harass Portuguese cities in North Africa. Do I give the Portuguese rifling+money, then DOW on Shaka and let him have fun trying to take cities with medieval crap? I'm leaning towards vassalization then gifting all the cities I take that I don't want(everything not in West Africa) back to him and having him be my attack dog?
As usual, here's the save. I know the first thing I'll do is switch to Bureau and get a levee up in Thebes+Oxford. Any more advice beyond that would be very welcome.
