Luxuries and my mental image of them

Is it just me, or does anybody else automatically think of chocolate when they see "Paris Demands Truffles".

Also, I tend to think of Spices being the Spice from Dune, and Marble as being small glass balls.

I know what these are meant to be, of course, but thats just what my brain does.

I wish there was chocolate. Tea and coffee for that matter.

Kind of wish that Mercantile CSs also had a bit more variety. In addition to Porcelain and Jewelry, perhaps Glassware (windows, chandeliers, etc.) or Furniture?

More on topic:

I don't really associate any Luxury resource with anything other than what it is, but I do like to imagine what my people are like because of them.

Say I have a city with Citrus, Wine, and Silk. I imagine that the people in that city wear a lot of silk, drink wine, and eat citrus fruits (in addition to having very citric cuisine).

I see that. I totally see that.

Now I'm imagining that for many millennia the population of my Paris have lived off Beef cooked in Orange juice. ("Ees a local specialty, mon ami..."), while the chaps down the road in Lyons might have lots of iron and marble about, but basically just get mutton all day every day. Meanwhile they go pray in Pagodas, and study at Oxford University of Paris.

Yep. I definitely get my RP on when I play the game, sometimes to the detriment of sound strategic decisions.

Might I recommend the More Luxuries mod? I forget the actual name, but it adds a lot including the luxuries you mentioned.

I knew of truffles as the fungus that people use pigs to find long before I knew there was a chocolate treat of the same name.

And yes, I role play my civ in this way also. A city on the plains with pastures and wine has very sophisticated cowboys.

Yeah, I love knowing my people are getting enough Vitamin C when I have citrus.

But does anyone else have any irrational luxury biases? Like, I cannot--it pains me--have a game without marble. And furs. I freakin' hate furs.

What I don't get about LR's is that citrus fruit gives happiness and bananas don't. So I imagine this:

Mother: Here's your fruit salad, my little Tommy!
Tommy: But I only like citrus, mommy.
Mother: But bananas make you grow up to be strong and handsome.
Tommy: But...they don't make me happy, mommy.

Also, why is salt OP? Salt providing 3-4 food is a bit unrealistic. So we all imagine a society living off just salt. Just imagine the health problems.

Salt makes other food sources more useful--meat can be stored, etc.

Huh. I never thought about it like that before.

What I do think, every time that I found a city and later on it "demands" something, is I imagine that city used to be a small child, and then it grew up and started "demanding" things from me, things which are expensive and hard to come by.

Basically, my cities become teenagers.

Re: salt, it's probably because it was astronomically important in the Middle Ages and before that. Remember that Roman soldiers were paid in it, and that it was the basis for the Songhai trading empire's existence.

As for the original topic, it depends on what civ I'm playing. For example, I tend to avoid citrus, except when I'm playing as Shimazu, when I actively seek it out (because of the then-obligatory "Satsuma" jokes). If anything, the luxuries that I tend to be biased towards are copper and to a lesser extent salt.

I haven't thought of using them to RP but I'll try it now I've read this...
