Lynksys Cable Router Multiplayer Issues

I recently got a Comcast Cable Model and networked my computers using a Linksys Cable Router. A friend of mine did the same and now we would like to play each other in Multiplayer Civ II. Unfortunately we have not been able to figure out how. We realized that our IP addresses came from the WAN IP address and not the LAN. We also realized we had to disable Blocking WAN Requests. Then we read that we had to disable the DHCP server which we both did. From there I'm not sure what has to be done. Can anyone help? If you know please tell us exactly what steps to take in very detailed terms. Neither of us are technical. Thanks.

In order to host a game, you need to forward ports 4993 on TCP and port 4994 on UDP to the hosting computer.
Do this by entering the setup for the router by opening a browser window and typing in the address 192.168.1.1 which is you cable router's address and clicking on the forwarding tab and entering the LAN IP of the computer and the ports needed to be forwarded. You also need to set a static IP for the hosting computer, 192.168.1.2 works well , otherwise the router may assign a different IP and the connection will fail.

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply. Unfortunately I guess I'm still messing things up. We are both playing on Linksys Routers. Here are the settings I changed based on your directions, maybe you can tell me where the problem is:

I am hosting. Here is what we did

On the settings page - I set the LAN IP address to 192.168.1.2

On the DHCP page - We both disabled the DHCP Server (starting IP address remained 192.168.1.1 because every time I change it to .2 it changes back and number of DHCP users stays at zero)

On the filters page - We both disabled Block WAN Request

On the Forwarding page we both entered 4993~4993 TCP on the first row and 4994~4994 UDP on the second row. I had the IP address end in .2 His ended in .1

Then I start Civ and go through Internet Game I change the default IP (which is my LAN IP) to the WAN IP.

He tries to connect and fails.

By the way, we are able to ping each other's WAN IP's.

What do you think?

Thanks!

It stays at .1 because that is the IP set to the router, just make sure it's not .100

On the filters page - We both disabled Block WAN Request Good good what your supposed to do.

If you are on different routers then you can both have the same LAN side IP of 192.168.1.2 or whatever it won't matter.

Then I start Civ and go through Internet Game I change the default IP (which is my LAN IP) to the WAN IP. Sounds right to me

Unfortunately I don't currently have my router setup at the moment so I'm not positive about everything but this should be enough to get it to work. If not just set the host computer to be the DMZ and that should solve the problems with playing , just remeber to turn it off when not playing or the other computers on the router will have trouble connecting.

-EDIT Did you remember to right click on the "My Network Places" icon on the desktop go to properties, select your connection (typically "Local area Connection" followed by a #) and right click and go to properties again choose Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and properties again and put in the static IP (192.168.1.2), Subnet Mask (255.255.255.0) Default Gateway ( your WAN IP) and your DNS Server addresses if you know them then save/exit and reboot.
