Mac Scenarios

Dear Alan,
here I am complaining again...

It seems as if my iBook doesn't like your SW style...

I downloaded also your TextEdit ('cause I'm willing to translate .txt files into Italian for my son) and it does NOT open either!

I'm starting to be "a little puzzled", to say the least...

And I have US spec OS (I regularly download upgrades from Apple main site)
Yesterday night I tried again to make it react, either clicking on it or dragging a GOTM Installer file on it: nothing but - as said - the (generic) "installer on" icon in the dock.
Sorry, my question is not where your software came from, it's what language are you using on your Mac? Are you actually running the OS in English or in Italian? All updates come from Apple in the US, and all copies of OS X can be localised to display applications using English or Italian or whatever. If you are using Italian then I may need to produce a version of the application that will respond corrrectly. Maybe that's also the problem with my modded TextEdit.

By the way, these days I'm experiencing a very annoying (to say the least) problem: my copy of Stuffit Expander has gone crazy and it freezes my Mac (I can't even "force quit" it, I must shut up via on/off button!) whenever I tried to start it or even just open its folder! It does not accept to be trashed (or, better, it IS in the trash now but the trash does not empties of it) and it does not accept a super-installation of another copy.
Don't know if these probs are related but the latter is VERY annoying (as I can't expand any .sit file I'm downloading.
Any suggestion about this?
Did you use that copy of Stuffit Expander to open my software? Stuffit is the normal app used to expand .zip files, and maybe it's messing up.

You certainly need to delete the copy of Stuffit you have and get a new one. If it is in the Trash then do this:

1. Open the Terminal application. It's in /Applications/Utilities.

2. When it displays a prompt type:

cd ~/.Trashes

(I think this is correct - I'm not at a Mac right now. If this doesn't work change 'Trashes' to 'Trash' and try again.

3. Type:

ls

This should display a list of the contents of your trash, and Stuffit Expander should be in the list.

4. Type:

sudo rm "<the full name of the Stuffit Expander file>"

5. Terminal will ask for your password and then it should delete the Stuffit file. If that works you can close Terminal. If not then come back here.

Then try downloading and installing the latest version of Stuffit Expander from aladdinsys.com.

Hope this helps.

Thx Alan,
being used to both ITA and ENG versions, I didn't remember which one I've now (I had to call my son at home for a check...)
Now:
my Mac OSX.2.8 is displaying ITA menus.
my CivIII is the US one

I solved the Stuffit issue almost by chance (it was blocked in the trash but I "indvertently" opened the trash while dismounting a memory pen, so I could drag it out and trash it via OS9.)

OK. So your OS is running in Italian mode - the menus are the clue. Grazie.

Try switching to English menus in the International Preferences and then see if it works. Alternatively, if you want to try a quick experiment, control click the GOTM Installer icon in the Finder and select "Display Package Contents". That should open a window with a single folder called "Contents". Open that folder and you will see a folder called "Resources". Inside that there should be a folder called "English". Move or copy the contents of "English" out into "Resources" and then try launching the GOTM Installer application. Please let me know if this works.

BTW. There's no point in trying to drop files or folders onto the application icon itself, as that doesn't do anything. It all happens in the window that should open when you run the application.
