Currently researching Chemistry hence may Maceman will be obseleted soon and I can upgrade them to Grenadiers. What will happen to my City RaiderI,II,II traits when I upgrade them to Grenadiers that is not suppose to have that trait?

all promotions are kept, even when the upgrade should not possibily have it.

However, you will not be able to upgrade them further down the line of city raider. A CR2 grenadier will stay as it ad vitam eternam.

Macemen won't be obsolete unless you also can build Riflemen. I use this updrade trick all of the time. Build a Maceman, give him CR I and II. Updrage him to a bad-ass Grenadier. It's a lot less usefull in BtS since I often have Rifling before Grenadiers are available.

You'll keep all upgrades, whick make them excellent city raiders later :) I like to upgrade them to riflemen, then infantry.

AS others have stated, you get to keep your promotions ....

What you do have to be careful about is that once you get a unit to a certain number of Xp's and you upgrade, you lose all the accumulated XP's...

e.g. You have a Maceman with 18/20 XP's......upgrade him to Grenadier, and now you have a Grenadier with 10/20 XP's  <-- I don't think it's a bug that it does this, but it doesn't make any sense to me ....

I always make sure that I've "reached the next XP level" before upgrading

Units that are upgraded are reduced to 10 XP. It doesn't affect them if they're below 10. Units lead by warlords are not affected by this rule (they keep their XP upon upgrades).

holy cow!! I can have Grenadier with CRIII! With 50% against Rifleman, it gonna be a easy picking on AI cities that are stacked with it. Gotta get the elite CR3 maceman with starting XP of 11 churning out from my military city!!!

do they now only lose xp when above 10xp or all the xp above last level??

Yes, great "feature". Loosing all that hard won XP.

They lose all XP above 10.

I husband my CR Macemen carefully and upgrade them to Grenadier as soon as they hit CR3. As noted, they murder Riflemen in cities. And if your first 3 promotions are CR1-3, you won't lose any XP by upgrading.

I've had CR3 Grenadiers that picked up Pinch as well as a couple of Combat promos before upgrading them to Infantry. CR3/Pinch Infrantry are brutes.

My opinion is it is best to upgrade CR maces to grenaders although this required you to tech military science which is a deadend tech I usually ignore (unless I need ships of the line). The exception which noone has discussed is the British, up grading to redcoats gets and extra +25% dammage versus gunpowder which is better versus rifles than greanders versus rifles. Also if the AI has cavalry, upgrading to rifles rather than grenaders is a no brainer.

There are a lot of opportunities that come from this. Something else I like to do is build a grenadier after you have Railroads and promote him in city defence. Then upgrade him to a machine gun and lock him in a city with a medic unit.

Good luck getting past a stack of those. haha.

Nice! I haven't thought of that before, will have to start using that one:) I have used the CR III Grenadiers trick before, send a Great Merchant out on a Trade Mission to help speed along those upgrades!

Another trick (especially for protective leaders) is to promote archers and longbowmen to Drill IV and then upgrade them to riflemen.

Can't rifles gain Drill promotions in BtS anyway? I can give my redcoats it I'm almost sure. Of course you could be talking pre BtS, which is different.

And CRIII redcoats are just unfair.

CR2 Redcoats are pretty unstoppable in my experience, Just ask Cyrus what Victoria did to him with them in one of my Warlords games :)
