Hi, in all of my games I have money problems. It makes it hard to get culture because I like my science at 100% or no lower than 80%. I know that marketplaces are supposed to provide money but whenever I make them, all it does is cost me 1 gold for support cost. Could someone please explain the purpose of marketplaces, do you have to be in the Republic (I like Monarchy), or is there another way to make more money? Thanks.

Marketplaces add something like 50% to what you are currently making money-wise --- in that city. So if you have your science rate at 100%, then there is no point building marketplaces if you want money -- as you cities won't be producing any (unless you have advisors)

You will never be able to keep your science rate at 100% unless you have alot of money coming in from foriegn civs each turn, which brings on the need to trade :)

The only way to make money is by lowering your Science rate.

You don't have to be in the Republic to make money btw, in my current game I was making 400+ Gpt, and in a Monarchy. I was still in the medieval ages.

Like it was mentioned before, science at 100% will not allow you to make money. I'm at the other end of the spectrum, I usually have science at 20 or 30%.

Republic will help you make money, but isn't required. I would advise you to lower your science rate. If you are playing on the lower levels of the game I suggest having the science slider as high as possible while not making a loss of money, that's what I do anyway.

Another tip - make sure that you get the most money you can out of the slider. For example, let's say when researching at 70%, 80% and 90% you get a research time of 5 turns. Make sure you research at 70% because there's no benefit of having the slider 90% and you get more money at 70%.

This is Civ_Man_89 (My other name). Thanks, I try to have science at 100%, but when I start making buildings I have to lower it, sometimes down to 40%. What I don't understand is how do you gain money? In my cities even when I set my citizens to work on mined and roaded gold mines, I still don't get any more money. Every time I make a building, I lose money, but nothing I do allows me to gain money. Like I said, I make marketplaces, but all it does is make me lose 1 gpt. In all my games once I get to the middle ages, I end up having to quit because I lose so much money that I have to lower my science to 30%, I fall behind in tech, have no culture because making buildings cost so much money, and other civs demand money from me. I accept, because when I refuse, and sometimes even when I accept, they declare war. Sometimes I give in or make peace, and the AI declares war the next turn. I can't do anything because my cities are poor because I don't have any money, and every turn I make less and less. ARGH!!!!

*end rant*

You should only build buildings in cities that really need them.

Btw, for your first civ advance, setting the slider to "as low as possible without being zero" would be best, since it usually takes near the maximum amount of time to get your first tech. If you do this with one of the more expensive techs (writing or, especially, iron working) then this really saves money.
