Map black

So I meet the system requirements, the pre-rendered movies run fine, the text from the civlopedia unit cards and so on are all there as are their pictures, but the map tiles are black. It's not unexplored territory, that is tanned out with little hand drawn pictures of fish or whatever on it. The black tiles are on known/explored territory, and what's odd is I can see some sort of resource tag whether it's milk or diamonds but it can't see the trees/grass/sand/river/whatever. I updated directx/drivers/windows and am getting pretty frustrated, HELP! This game looks and sounds like its a lot of fun
