Map editor

www.MacSoftGames.com. Select Support tab, then Civ3. The second question in the Troubleshooting list covers it and contains a link.

Hi

I download the editor from the supplied link and when I try and start it I get as far as the splash screen and then I get
"The application Civ3Edit quit unexpectedly."

Any ideas, I just upgraded from an older version of the editor as I was getting little purple triangles on the border of all the map grids.

I also just upgraded to 1.29b2 Civ3. I am running 10.4.2 on an iMac G5 2.0GHz.

Regards
Gerry

Welcome to MacCivFanatics :wavey:

In the "The application Civ3Edit quit unexpectedly." screen, is there a "Send a report to Apple" button? If so, click it and you'll get a crash log listing. Copy/paste that to a post here and we'll see if there are any clues. You can then choose whether to actually send the crash report, but I rather doubt if Apple will do anything.

The purple triangles are still there in the most recent version I have - 1.32.1, and that's the one linked on MacSoft's site. They appeared with Tiger.

[EDIT] I just realised what you said in your last line. The editor is not compatible with Civ3 version 1.29. You have to use the 1.21g .bic. That's the reason for your crash.

I used an older version of CIV3 and the Editor is fine.
Thanks very much for the help.

Is anything being done on the little triangles or do we have to live with that.

As far as I know there's no one working on the editor now, so the triangles are probably here to stay. It was developed for MacSoft by Brad Oliver when he was at Westlake, where he also ported Civ3 to Mac OS. He left Westlake a while ago to move to Aspyr. Westlake is now inactive as the rest of their staff moved on to new pastures.

Presumably the rights to the editor code remained with MacSoft, but all the evidence indicates that they are not actively supporting or developing it:

- Civ3 version 1.29 has never been released, although we know that Brad passed a working copy to MacSoft for pre-release QA before he left Westlake.

- The editor is stuck at the level of Civ3 version 1.21, although 1.29 has been out for PC for three years.

- There's a straw in the wind in this forum to indicate that Aspyr may be picking up the Civ-for-Mac ball. If this is the case then MacSoft now have even less incentve to support it.

I was trying to get the editor from the link which was posted here but the Civ III website doesn't work, the browser just say "Not found". Is there any other place to find the editor?

Hmm. It looks as if MacSoft have takn down their Civ3 support page. If you explore their site you find Civ3 listed under games supported by Atari (previously Infogrames). If you follow that link you get to Atari's site, and you can select Support or Downloads for Civ3 for Macintosh. I don't recall whether this is new or whether it was always there. I never had to find it before.

The version 1.21g updater is listed in solitary splendour under Downloads, but no Editor.

So ... I don't know what's going on, but meanwhile, assuming the email address in your profile is correct, you have mail.

UPDATE
Email rejected. It apears the file is too big or your mailbox is too full. The message was 2.6MBytes.

I've emailed MacSoft support to let them know the Civ3 support page is down.
