Update,

Here is some preview pics of the new remade map. I still have a way to go. Do to other obligations, I have to take a week off.

So enjoy the pics.
Out of interest, how come the tundra (or whatever it is) at the top of Russia stops so abruptly?

Hey, Lord P. Nice to hear from you. Well, On the last map I figured on my comp I used about 1 GB of RAM and that includes AV and anti-spyware and general windows program.

Too be honest, I'm sure it would help to reduce civs (and to turn off some programs) but with the map size I'm not sure the experience would be the same.

PeeJay2K2,

too be honest it is an experimental line. I have a new atlas w/ terrain, vegetation, and resouses. So the line only represents a portion of the tundra line from my map to see how it looks. It will be fixed soon.

Anyway, how about the river placement? There will be Landmark peaks (Does anyone know there value in CivIV). It looks like it will be very difficult to make peaks usable terrain, so unfortunately peaks will be limited.

TheWusel,

Actually, (sheepish grin), this last week I've played hooky from the map. I haven't gotten a chance to play Civ IV much so I've been experimenting. In my current game, I've started it a couple times using different techniques. In the current version my passive-aggressive Roman empire has 11 cities and has never gone to war. They have discovered every religion but Budhism. I'm currently "spamming every close neighbor with Christain Missionaries. Isabella has been annoyed with me for a few 1000 years but I have been planning to end her presence on my continent for awhile, I've been looking for an excuse.

My military now has:
7 Archers, 12 longbowmen, 2 crossbowmen; 3 knights; 18 Praetorians, 20 spearmen; 12 Catapults. And the Roman Generals are getting very anxious. I still need a few more knights I think but I'll soon have GUNPOWDER....

As for the map, I'm experimenting because I'm trying to figure out the proper balance of resources. This map screams a marathon game. According to my new source maps resources are literally everywhere. So I'm comtemplating the possibility that this map will need some type of mod file at the minimum. For instance, I'm currently looking into the movement scale. I'm thinking the ships need somewhere between 2 to 2.5 times the number of movement points.

I'll have some more thoughts soon. I welcome any ideas to help bring forth the definitive Earth map.

Update,

I have started my map update. All starting locations are now plotted. Also doing more river plotting.

Started using worldbuilder on the KRE to eliminate nuisannces like northern Canada coastline and eliminating modern civs from an ancient scenario.
Can't figure the latter part out at all.

Instead maybe I can help with this project and not duplicate work in progress.

I've been playing since Civ I but am sorry to have found this web site sooo late. :cry:

alatari,
Have you looked at the pics on the second page? I did redraw this map. But let me figure out where to put you. Send me a PM telling me what your ideas for this project are and we can discuss them in my forums or here.

Hello All,

As I sit here, I'm working on the land and vegetation of Australia. As I look at my atlas, I face a delima... How do I deside what land should be defined as grassland and which should be defined as plain?

The choices that I need to define (Note, some are obvious):

Alpine

Desert and Desert Scrub

Mid-Latude Forest:
... Broadleaf Forest
... Coniferous Forest
... Mixed Coniferous and broadleaf Forest
... Mixed Woodland
... Woodland and Scrub (mediterranean)

Mid-Latitude grassland:
... Short Grass (Steppe)
... Tall Grass (Prairie)
... Tall Grass (Prairie) and Wooded Steppe

River Valley And Oasis

Scrub and fernland

Tropical Forest
... Tropical Rainforest
... Light Tropical forest
... Woodland and Scrub

Tropical Grassland
... Savanna
... Wooded Savanna

Tundra and Alpine

Permanent Ice

Kronosbud99,

Okay, I'm through goldbricking and experimenting. I should have a few new pics later today or tonight.

Strategyonly,

Sure, go ahead and use it in a senario. Just Give me credit for it.

Here is a preview pic. This Map is huge...

Comments are welcome.

A question has come up regarding terrain verses height. I am hoping to get some suggestions. Here is the breakdown of topographical heights on my source maps:

Sea Level;
100 m. (328 ft.);
200 m. (656 ft.);
500 m. (1,640 ft.);
1,000 m. (3,281 ft.);
2,000 m. (6,562 ft.);
5,000+ m. (16, 404+ ft.)

Any suggestions?

I'd say that it's not the height but the unevenness of the terrain that should determine wether a square is flat, hill or peak. For example, take a look at Tibet or Namibia. Both countries are mainly situated on a big plateau. In case of Tibet over 5000m above sea level, while Namibia is quite a bit lower but still high at about 1500m. But despite their height, I'd say Tibet is definitely tundra (-hills maybe), and not peaks. Namibia I think should be mostly plains and desert, with some hills, but not all over the place.

*wheee, going to Namibia soon :cool: *

Wow. You've poured your heart and soul into this map, Flash1. Congratulations on your perseverance and here's a toast to your (eventual) success. I look forward to giving this map a run on my copy of Civ IV for the Macintosh (I've got a top-of-the-line Intel iMac ... 2G RAM, 256MB VRAM, 2GHZ ... so I'm hoping it can handle it).

Gatekeeper

I love playing huge earth maps, I'm waiting on bated breath for this one. It looks like you will have the earth map to have for those of us w/ the hardware to play it. Hats of to you Flash! :hatsoff:

One question, I'm ignorant on creating maps, custom content and such, so maybe this is a dumb question. Will this work with the warlords expansion?

Thanks Guys,

Update,
I have currently been away from my computer for almost a week because I live in St. Louis and have been without my power. I am currently living at my parents house until I can return home and to the map.

Gatekeeper,
From my test cases, 2 GB RAM should work. But in the beginning save every so often as you may have to restart your computer until you figure out that all works well. I have 1.5 GB RAM and I think I may need more RAM.

Darth Beer,
With the base map, I don't expect any problems with Warlords. After the map is done however, some tweaks and a scenario are planned. For instance, because of its size, I think movement will have to be increased around 2.5 times.

I thank you both for your kind comments. I hope to be able to finish it very soon.

Update,
Life is slowly returning to the STL. I got Warlords the day I left to come home. I haven't really had time to mess with it. But as long as the school takes to rewire parts of this apartment, it is causes some delays in cleaning up.

Now, back to Warlords. I hope to get back to the map tonight. A few questions have arisen. Should the map be finished for vanilla or Warlords. If finished for Warlords, and I figure out how to do it... Should I unlock most of the full 24 civs on this map?

I say Warlords with all 24 civs. I know that makes for an even more rediculously crowded Europe, but it also flushes out Africa nicely with the Carthaginians and the Zulu, and Korea in the far East.

Exactly. And given the sheer size and scale of this map, you might as well fill it out with as many civs as possible! :)
