Does anyone build marines and does anyone use an invasion strat that call for their use?

Once I get tracked units I never go back but I'd be interested to hear if people stratagies for marines and paratroopers etc.

It's been awhile since I last persued a late-game aggressive action against the AI to my satisifcation (Vanilla Civ3 in fact) but I do remember Marines being quite useful.

A particular benefit of using them is that if you manage to capture a city by sea, you can then unload Modern Armor and Mech. Infantry into the city and still move them around, not having wasted the movement points in the initial landing. They make rapid inland progress much easier.

Of course, you're going to be hard pressed to get Marines to beat Infantry or Mech. Infantry, so you'll probably need a large contingent of bombers, ships or a nuke to crack a city open first.

Your forces aren't counterattacked quite so easily, get the city defense bonus, and if you really need to you can rush an airport the next turn and just start flying in your military.

Oh, and it's Corps, BTW. ;)

oh I thought he was intentionally using "Marine corpse" as a pun to suggest he thinks Marines are useless and just die easily.

Anyway, I LOVE Marines, I just think they're really cool in real life and its kinda spilled over into Civ (same for submarines and ships). I love having them around, they can be very useful.

If you've got a fleet made up (say a fleet of a Carrier, few Battleships, couple of destroyers etc) it doesn't hurt to have a transport or two filled with Marines, just incase you see an opertunity to use them, and obviously they're good for those one tile island cities that annoy everyone of us. A Marine Army is awesome, very useful in my opinion also

And also, they're quite good if all else fails for propping up some of your cities under attack, I've used them many times in that role.

As for paratroopers............. hmmm......... well this debate's been going on for ages. are they any use? I can't really answer here, I've never really used them in great numbers. by the time I'm at the paratroopers stage I'm either coasting to victory or fighting for my life.

As far as the paratroopers go, I find that they can be of great use when planning a cordinated attack on an AI civ. If you have a chance to land them on enemy resources such as iron or whatever you can use your tanks and MI to other means. :)

Pfeffersack - would you belive I never thought of making a marine army? My memory of marines is of them bouncing off my MI

I'll have to have a think about para's and pillaging...

Semper fudge!

Para's are also useful for fortifying a land newly conquered with your marines, especially if you have an airstrip nearby.

Marines have the highest attack before tanks, so they're a good bet if you don't have oil. However, if you're dominating, or losing, the tech to get them is optional, so I wouldn't bother with it unless you don't have oil. Amphibious attack is useful for making a beachead and allowing troops to fortify first turn without having to wait 1 turn, when they are vulnerable to attack.

Only time I use them is for the 1-2 tile islands that I can't land on any other way.

The army idea is a good one to remember, in case you need to take a city from the sea for some tactical reason.

I am going to save an army for marines and give it a try. Like my friend Zerksees said "in case you need to take a city from the sea..." I once played a game where I had to invade another island. They threw everything at me and they were very big. I thought to myself ONLY IF I HAD AN ARMY TO CUT OFF THEIR CAPITAL. I would have then been able to destroy their oncomming modern units and then they would have only been able to build older ones which I could have moped the floor with.

Cheers:beer:

I think a Marine Army is a waste. It is not important if the Marines survive. Someone already said:

Their job is to take a city that has been weakend by bombardement/bombers by sea, allowing Tanks, Modern Armor and Mech Infantry to unload there and fortify immediately there and/or start attacking immediately.

They are also great for disrupting enemy space race victories if the capital is a coastal city - boom, they will have to restart building if you take your capital city.

Marines are great island attackers and shock troops.

Paras are great for res decapitation esp backed by cav/tanky things reinforcing.

I got my spine and I got my Orange Crush (REM)

I think that marines are very cool in real life and in civ. However, their usefulness in civ is questionable. It's so much easier to take a city by landing modern armor and mech infantry next to it and then attacking the city than it is to try to send human wave attacks of marines directly from the ocean to the city. I think that a powerful "Modern Marine" would be a good addition to the game. They would replace marines like modern paratroopers replace paratroopers.

My stratergy revoles around a strong attack (in the form of tanks) - if someone attacks me they may win a few battles but when my couter attack comes they will be devastated by my tanks. However I do build marines when I am planning to make an assault across the sea simply because I can get them into a city quickly and then unload my units directly into that city (to go on and attack another city). Marines do tend be be a bit pathetic though.

I really like the suggestion about modern marines, very good idea!
What would been the values? 12.8.1, I think it can beat infantry, and with some air support, mech infantry... and when would it become available?

I love Marines because they are...
a: very useful taking out a coastal city
b: they just looking cool, in vanilla these guys are the only troop which is armed with machine guns :ar15:

i usually build one or two and never get to use them for amphibious landings, but after reading this thread i will build one marine army, mostly for the heck of it,i doubt ill use them for anything else than land warfare, but i do have something like 14 armies containing almost everything else,so why not

What would been the values? 12.8.1,

In conquests, the values are similar to your proposed "modern marine": 12.6.1
