Is there any real purpose for marines? whenever I get them I already have tanks and infantry, and they really blow marines away. is there something i'm missing?

Marines are very effective against coastal city, but they need air bombardement support. I am able to take or destroy many coastal city with this combo. Even city defended by infantry are easily destroy with suffisiant bombardement.
And not the least if you are into democraty you can wage war without problem because you are not into there cultural border, you see, a transport with a move of 5 or 6( with magelan exp.) will be always out of there cultur border. So war weariness is minimum.
When you control the sea, you control the land.

Heh! We used marines to invade those 1 square islands in one of the succession game. And those islands are defended by Mech Inf. Of course the Mech Inf was bombarded heavily with Stealth Bombers before the Marines make their move. ;)

Marines would be more useful in multiplayer. You are naturally going to have your defensive units placed at the border cities, not the port cities. With railroads, you don't need to have units spread evenly. Marines would be used to jump from out of nowhere and take a port city unprepared to defend itself. In rare circumstances, they can be used to take the infamous 1 tile islands.

Hmmm, marines...

They can be quite useful, but I like to play maps with a lot of water, so perhaps I find more uses for them then most people.

I find they are quite useful, even later on in the game (late modern say) the trick is to have LOTS on them when assaulting a city, and make sure you soften it up first.

Another thing you might want to try is beefing them up a little, or, beef them up a lot and slot them into a later tech. I just finished a game where I had them set to 16/10/1, and it made naval assaults a lot more interesting, instead of landing modern armour next to the city I want to capture, I would capture it with the marines (after a generous naval bombardment of course) and then store my tanks in the city. Even so, I think 16/10/1 is a little to powerful, historically such assaults were very costly to the attacker, so maybe 14/8/1 would be better, or perhaps reducing the cost to allow faster production would better balance it.

Regardless, the marine is no where near as useless as the paratrooper, who I’m currently trying to tweak (increase in power, to 16/10/1, increase in cost to that of a modern armour, as paratroopers were usually elite troops, and an increase in operational range).

Just try playing around with the editor until you find something that is suitable.

Up their stats a bit - I go with 10/8. Then they actually get useful, like modern-day swordsman.
