Mash-ups

I tend to find alot of Mash Up's really terriable. Or really annoying. Sometimes they sound great the first time you hear it....then quickly looses appeal.

perfectly acceptable opinion, i disagree but i don't mind.

but what of their legality?

i'm around industry insiders from time to time and mash-ups seems to be the next big issue in the recording industry.

edit: besides, of course, piracy.

How come you all call boot legs "mash ups"?

What is wrong with "bootleg"? who decided to change the name? no one told me.

i thought bootleg was reserved for unofficial tapings of shows whilst a mash-up was just when a dj throws a bunch of songs together to make a new song.

A mash-up is two (or more) song fragments played together, either cotemporaneously or spliced closely back and forth.

ah, well then lets go with a more specific meaning for this thread.

bastard pop.

OMG! Jive Bunny and the Mastermixers! They rock, so I have to say I approve of mash-ups. :D I also recall a band from the (I think) early 80s called "Stars on 45s" that did it with Beatles and maybe others' songs as well.

By the way, isn't this just called a medley, rather than a mash-up?

A medley is usually played. This is done electronically. Playing two songs simultaneously is virtually possible without two bands.

Are these songs sold for profit? If they are, I can see the legal problems. Musicians whose music is sampled are entitled to royalities and credit.

Personally, I have no problem with bootleggers, as long as they dont try and sell the CD. I wish we had more of them...I'd be willing to buy recordings from them, for practice purposes.
