Master of Myrror Fantasy Mod 2.0

I have a rather annoying problem. My game crashes repeatedly at the exact same time. It has not done so previously.

The only thing I can imagine could cause is:
I have the spell of knowledge (gains everything known by two others), and I suspect two of the others of having discovered ascendance (which render the former obsolete) the previous round. The game crashes at pretty much exactly the time when I would expect to get told that I have been given the tech/told that the wonder was obsolete.

Does anyone know if this actually is a bug in the mod... or, even better, have a solution to my problem.

@Pfeffersack

Thanks for the information. However, if I were to increase the amount of transported units I'd probably be even more conservative - twice the stats at the most.

@oyoyoy

I've never heard of this before. Does the crash give anykind of an error message or does it just hang or crash to desktop? If you can attach a savegame, I can try and figure out what's causing it.

It would be strange if the thing causing it would actually be the Spell of Knowledge acquiring the tech that makes it obsolete. It would probably be a bug in main game and I don't think anyone has experienced a crash when acquiring Education via Great Library.

It has crashed again in a new game. On the turn when I was about to discover Ascendance. On this occasion I did not possess the spell of knowledge. I've attached the first save. If I end the turn it crashes just before my new turn starts. The error message is something along the lines of "Civ3Conquest has caused a problem. It will now close. Sorry for any inconvenience." My windows is not english so it's probably not the exact message. I'm using conquest 1.22.

Apart from the crash your mod is brilliant.

It didn't crash with me. Strange.

The crash is clearly related to Ascendance, but it seems to be something affecting only your system. I can't think of anything that should cause a crash. Maybe if the Civ3\Conquests\Scenarios\MoM\Art\Tech Chooser\Icons\ascendancelarge.pcx has gotten corrupt somehow, but I don't think so (you can check this by looking at ascendance's pedia entry - if the big tech icon shows, it shouldn't be it causing the crash) Also, it could be related to the era splash, but MoM doesn't touch those until 3rd era.

About the only thing I can suggest is reinstalling first Master of Myrror and then Conquests itself. My best guess is that your copy of either MoM or C3C has gotten corrupt somehow. Sorry that I can't be of more help. :(

Thanks for the help anyhow. I've been testing with a different mod. It seems to be crashing randomly in this one. I've never had civ crash like this before so I'm sure you're right it's corrupt. I'll try reinstalling later.

Just downloaded this last night, figuring I'd play a turn or two before bed.

Four hours later...

Some early thoughts from someone whose first mod experience was a few weeks ago with the brilliant WH mod.

1. Whatever terrain is the one in the current download (not the optional) suits me just fine. I found myself appreciating, as you mentioned, the 'atmospherics.' Definitely adds to the game.

2. While perhaps UU's will differentiate the mages within factions, I really enjoy how the factions are differentiated from one another. I'm playing Merlin at present, and got a real charge out of the Acolyte's soundfile when fortifying. The Cleric sipping a la an Explorer was rather disappointing.... guess I was expecting another hymn!

3. Regarding the one Strat Res for each side-race... brilliant idea! Sure, It'd be fun to be cranking out units for all of 'em, but it made me really have to work hard for the payoff. Not a single one was anywhere near my starting loc, so I had to send a pair of settles and Bowmaster guards way far afield just to get Humans. Then, because the Humans weren't in my initial radius (bad city location if I did), I'm rushing the cultural build for the city. Once that's done, I have to see what's equivalent to Harbours and rush that, or face the risk-laden option of chain-ganging workers. In all the time I've played Civ, I've never had to work so hard and plan so strategically for a Strat Res, and I'm loving the challenge! Makes the game really unique, and massively boosts replay value.

4. Back to the flavour, enjoy the emphasis on magic, ie- Great Spells instead of Great Wonders. Thrilled when I swung that defense-boosting Great Spell, because I'm traditionally a non-aggressive player.

5. No comments on unit balance and combat yet... the only thing I've gone up against are wolves and cats. Once I get the Humans- and this is part of the reason I'm so keen on having to earn them- is because they'll provide the offensive boost I'll need to go to war against my nearest rival, one of the Chaos mages.

Great stuff, Drift, and extremely entertaining. Sorry no 'constructive criticism' as of yet... you'll just have to settle for praise. ;)

I just wanted to say, thanks for all the hard work, this is a terrific mod. I haven't gotten very far in it, but it already is bringing back to mind the many hours I spent playing Master of Magic, back in the day. I am also grateful for the lighter terrain. My eyes aren't as young as they used to be, and I would hate to have to raise my gamma just to play this mod. The graphics really do look terrific though, both in the darker and lighter versions. Congratulations! :D

Thanks for the kind words Pogue Mahone and Llewen. :)

@Lusikka755

New version is temporarily on hold. I will probably get it done at some point, but these past few weeks I've been really busy with my studies. I decided that after two years of slacking, it was time to get my act together and start getting those credits in. Due to this, I've had a lot less free time and since modding isn't a priority, I've ended up doing other things when I'm not studying.

Also, majority of my requests not yielding any results didn't exactly motivate my modding. Kinboats spiders did spark my interest and they will be included, but it remains to be seen, when I get things done again. It could be that I end up doing the expansion in less ambitious fashion with stripped down features and less polish than I originally planned.

Hrrrmmmm, that sounds suspiciously like you have a life Drift, "Real modders don't have lives Mister Drift," he says sternly...

Seriously though, I work with some modders for another game, and I know how hard it is to find good help... :(

I completed all the research and the game got stuck because there was nothing else to research. BOOO!!!

@rucknrun

Hmmm. I have never completed all the research myself ( :blush: ). Did the game crash to desktop or what? I've thought that the future techs would start after you research Transcendece. Can anyone else confirm this or has anyone else completed all research without the game getting stuck.

I've heard reports where people have won with Spell of Mastery (meaning that they've completed all research as Rune Mastery becomes available with Transcendence). Of course they may have had still techs to research if they've skipped the ones not needed for era advancement.

If this is a problem, could it be related to the game using the first three eras, with the fourth era being empty? Are the future techs connected to finishing the fourth era? Would be pretty strange if it was.

In other news, Master of Myrror was covered in a strategy oriented French magazine PC4War along with Ancient Mediterranean Mod.

Here's a pic of the page (I don't have a scanner)

Based on a bad Babelfish translation, the piece seems to be favorable, although it does seem to be a bit superficial. However, the nature of the article is to showcase mods, not review them. I'm not sure if I understood it right, but there seems to be a part where the writer says that you can only research stuff from your own branch, which is incorrect.

Anyway, I'm really thankful for the mod's inclusion (it was also on a coverdisc). Seems like a good magazine, pity it's in French.

WH-mod will be on their next issue coverdisc.

I was on the tech tree screen when I encountered the problem. I tried to exit and it says, What do you want to research?, In a pop up box an it will not let me exit. It does not appear there is a future tech. If it is a problem with my install let me know. I like the mod and want to play it.

@rucknrun

Are you absolutely sure that you didn't have anything left to research? Some race tech you passed in a former era or something like that?

If you wish, you could upload a savegame here and I could take a look at it. :) To do so, click "manage attachements" when posting a new message.

I couldn't save. I had to go to the task manager and kill the civilization process. Usually if I have something left to research the little advisor picks it automatically but he was the one that would not let me out of the screen. When I get home I will try it again and save a screen shot.

Since the current subject is tech tree bugs... Some time ago i tried something, I went to the espionage screen and tried to steal a tech from some faction, unfortunately that faction didnt have any techs i could steal cuz i was the most advanced, i am completly sure i couldnt steal any tech (mostly because i tried clicking them all:P). Anyway, because of that i couldnt exit that screen, the advisor kept telling me to choose a tech to steal first... which i couldnt... I didnt really get much troubled because i thought it would be an error by civ itself and not by MoM but after reading the previous posts im doubting that now.

Unfortunately i cant provide a save game for it because it was quite some time ago and i usually delete old save files except the last ones of each game i make. Like rucknrun said, i had to kill civ from the task manager in order to get outta there.

Since im not much into the modding business i cant help ya there with what this "prob" appears to be, just one more report, MoM still rocks, looking forward for the next version :)
