[MoO] Master or Orion 4

There is a very marked difference in speeds between ship classes (such that battleships without displacement devices are basically useless in fleets of smaller ships, since the battle will be over before they arrive).

Unlike the older games, you can't win just with frigates and destroyers since module sizes don't decrease over time as you develop engineering tech - there are some useful modules, like the Mauler Device and heavy fighter bays, that simply can't fit on small ships. Also the number of modules a ship can mount is associated with ship class, so you want some larger ships for utility roles.

Cruisers and battleships seem to have little role, but both smaller and larger classes seem useful, and work well together with speed boosts or displacement devices on the latter.

Can't say I can agree with this statement. Cruisers and Battleships make up the Firepower of your fleet. Destroyers and Frigates are your Pickets and Escorts and soak up the 1st wave of incoming.

There is a 2nd Update coming before the end of this month. Much more will be added to the game then.

What are people facing that this is even a relevant concern? I've faced the latest-game AI fleets and mopped the floor with them with frigates and destroyers; they don't have the numbers for a second wave in any case. Cruisers and battleships just don't have the speed, and while you can equip them with displacement devices you aren't really getting any extra firepower over building 5-strong squadrons of the smaller classes. Only Titans and Doom Stars offer a significant power upgrade - cruisers/battleships have the advantage that they're big enough to carry fighters, but only heavy fighters seem worth using and then probably not as efficient as guns and missiles (assault boats are in the tech tree, but not yet implemented).

Difference in playsytle I guess. My Battleships and Cruisers are My main force after I can build Titans. Before that it's cruisers and destroyers with a few frigates. Cheaper to build 2 or 3 cruisers than 20 frigates and the Cruisers (at least My cruisers) will take all the opponents frigates it cares to throw at me.

By the time you have Hvy Fighters The game In It's Current State has generally been won by the player already.

I'm waiting on the end of month update before I spend much more time in play right now.

Me too actually. I have to say I haven't paid a lot of attention to relative cost differences - I essentially ported my favoured MOO 2 strategy over to MOO, which was heavily focused on small ships - plus Alkari still get their racial defence bonus, which favours going small.

Has the game already been abandoned? I noticed there's a fan-made patch out. Only a year after release.

The Devs have made 1 patch in the last year iirc. The Fan Patch "fixes" some of the issues the devs did not acknowledge as issues. I've started 1 game in the last 9 months. And it was before the Fan Patch.

Too many ppl wanted MoO2.5 and did not get what they wanted so badly.

I take it that the reason there's been only one patch is not that the game was so bug-free at release?

Sheesh. I get that you want to cut your losses, but to bring in Mark Hamill and Michael Dorn as voice actors, and then only release one patch, that's dreadful.
