[MoO] Master or Orion 4

From their site:

Frigate: Small and cheap early attack vessel. It's limited load capacity forces it to be lightly armed.

Destroyer: Middling escort vessel, more heavily armed and more resilient than the frigate.

Am I the only one concerned about the game supposedly dictating the function of the ships? It almost sounds more like a "unlock X tech, get predefined Y ship" system rather than a "design your own ship" system.

Yes, I got that vibe too. But maybe the ships have certain slots so the player can still customize what items to put in each slot. So when they say that the frigate is lightly armed, it just means that it only has 1 weapon slot whereas the destroyer gets 2, but the player can still pick what weapons to put in the slots. That would at least give some customization. If the ships are pre-made, that would be rather disappointing.

For me it says: Smaller ship = Less space = Less armor&weapons. As it always been like in Moo2 (and Moo1 I guess).

I am more disappointed about the starlanes

I asked the question on the MOO4 facebook page and got an answer from Brad Ermey. There will be ship customization like in MOO2.

Awesome. Tell them that more screenshots would be better than requiring us to parse words to figure out what's in the game, lol.

in the mean time, i will just keep posting new articles :)

http://www.ign.com/articles/2015/07/01/e3-2015-master-of-orion-returns-to-reclaim-its-4x-crown

some interesting bits:
...manpower that can be allocated one of three ways: research...production...and food/population growth, which grows the colony and gives you more overall manpower.
Maybe the MOO2 "production for Housing" mechanic is dropped. This is an improvement.

As for research, Orion contains 75 main discoverable technologies as well as “hundreds more underneath,” explained Keeling...For our demo, Keeling opted to research Fusion technology, which unlocked powerful fusion bombs, miniaturized nukes, and faster engines for every space-faring vessel.
Only now it's fully clear to me that 75 techs actually means 75 technology fields. Each field contains multiple technologies. And so this is the same really as MOO2, which had about 75 tech fields as well. Description in this article seems to suggest that by researching a field you get all the techs in that field (everybody is creative?) or perhaps the reviewer has missed some mechanic here (likely). It really depends on what the word 'unlocked' means.

...the ... galaxy map ... consists of a flat, interconnected series of solar systems that are shrouded by a fog of war until you’re able to explore each region ... Another dives into a wormhole and pops up in another part of the galaxy.
So Starlanes and Wormholes in this game. And the map is flat, so not everything is 3d as Victor said.

...the Mrrshan feline race. “If you scratch our back, we’ll scratch yours,” she purred.
Already tired of this quote now...

Orion will be rich with options — including treaties, technology sharing, and resource trading — and that opponent AI will actually be, you know, intelligent.
'resource trading' would be a new feature - anybody knows if it was in MOO3?
It would be really great if the game would give us an a.i. that actually has a decent intelligence!

It’s entirely possible Orion will give you more granular control over the action, but I didn’t see much evidence of that during this particular demo.
I wonder, how can a game be ~1/2 year away from release and ship design, ship combat, multiplayer and modding are all very unclear. These are BIG parts of the game. Not only from these previews we have seen but also from developers words it seems they either are not ready to share this info, or [other reasons]

Fortunately, I also didn’t see much micromanagement.
Lovely!

there are five distinct win conditions linked to combat, technology, diplomacy, economics, and “excellence.”
Ok, nice, but give us the option to toggle them on/off individually please.

On FB, you can now also find the Human vessels.
I think they are pretty good!

Have found this article in Dutch, which mentions an interesting new fact:
https://gamer.nl/articles/preview/bijna-vergeten-op-e3-master-of-orion/
De oprichter en CEO is groot fan van Master of Orion en vernam dat er een team onder de vleugels van Atari bezig was met een reboot van de reeks.
It says that Victor learned that a team under wings of Atari was working on a reboot of MOO.
Thus, MOO4 development already started before Wargaming bought the rights, which perhaps explains why they are not developing inhouse.

I wonder of some of the artistic and design deviations from MOO arise from an independent studio starting the game before it was "Master of Orion". Maybe they were making a 4X space game for the genre and kind of lucked into the naming rights with an impressive demo for Wargaming?

That is an interesting possibility!

My speculation for now is that NGD had already started development of this game under the wings of Atari and that they pitched the game to Wargaming as soon as Wargaming bought the ip.
Wargaming then decided to let NGD continue working on this game but with an increased budget and addition of some new staff chosen by Wargaming.

I thought Atari was defunct already.

Atari filed for Bankruptcy in Jan 2013. and Wargaming bought MOO in August 2013.
Atari could have very well given the MOO project to NGD somewhere before 2013.
Then, when Atari went bust, NGD was sitting on this unfinished project...

I dunno. Companies that declare bankruptcy generally do so after months of cost-cutting, layoffs and generally not spending any money.

Plus, Stardock had approached Atari earlier about making MOO4 and they declined. Seems kind of weird that they would then turn around and give it to a relatively-unproven studio like NGD.

Yeah, I dunno too :) just thinking out loud... your theory could just as well be true.

-quote from that article:
"We'd like to do a Master of Orion 4," said Wardell. "It would be an updated Master of Orion 2. There would be more to it, but that would be the basis of it."

*sigh* .. A MOO2.5 would have been in good hands at Stardock.

... but maybe an all new MOO4 is in good hands at NGD/Wargaming .. we will see.
