Is it a good idea?

Give combat 1 and medic 1 to a transport. Then, during an invasion if your troops (like your GG unit) gets hurt, just send them on the ship, and heal in the middle of the ocean where no one can reach you, safe from the enemy. With Medic 1 your units will heal faster too.

I've done that, but its really only effective when you're invasion force was amphibious from the beginning. If you had a land-based assault, it would be very inconvenient to keep marching your wounded troops to the coast. Best to stick with a standard medic then.

When they accompany a coastal invasion force, after you take a city, you can just load your army back onto the ship and it should be healed by the time you reach your next city.

I normally do this with destroyers.
One destroyer in every battlegroup gets medic promotions.

I don´t know if this enables troops on transports in the same tile as the destroyer to make use of the medic promotions, but I assume so.

Seems a waste of promotions, if you ask me..
I usually give my transports +1 movement.

Rather than giving it to the transports, I usually give it to the escorts, usually the ones that're bombarding the city. Then, after I take the city, I move the ship into the city and heal the wounded troops faster than they'd normally heal.

Does Medic II work on land tiles if it's on a ship next to the coast? I think that would work even better - your troops wouldn't even have to go into the city to heal, and you'd be able to heal during a seige situation.

A Medic II unit can only heal units in adjacent tiles that the Medic could legally enter itself. Ships can't heal adjacent land units unless those units are in a friendly city.

These are all pretty good ideas. Goes to show you can always learn more here on the forum than buying a book from the store. Thanks!
