Medieval Viking Rampage

Shortly after doing this, I played a game on the Monarch level which sat in a save game file for a couple of weeks before I finished it off yesterday. Strangely, it sat because I was unsure if a dramatic win was possible.

Update:

Conclusion: Ragnar is unfair on terra.

I haven't played Ragnar yet, but one strategy I would hope to employ with him is circumnavigate the globe early (obviously not possible on all maps, but would work on Archipelago and some others), and only start building most of the fleet when all your units get 2 bonus XP from Vassalage or Theocracy. That would allow you to pick Navigation II as the first promotion for your fleet which gives you 5 movement Galleys and Triremes. Then use the massive mobility to threaten two or three cities at once and attack the one that is least defended.

I think it's almost always a good idea to try to be first around the globe on a water map, and Ragnar clearly gets a huge advantage in finishing that quest whenever it's possible with galleys, and a nearly as big an advantage (all naval units get nav1, not just the primitive ones) on maps where it's not. If you plan to wage war on the seas, there probably isn't a better leader.
