[MH2] - Monarchs take on Deity

sorry guys...haven't had time to log on to cfc since monday ~

but i see that there's no consensus on trades (unless everyones cool with Mike's suggestion, which was only currency to surya)

here's the save, too ~

as i tell my students, better late than never

Not quite, the idea was to trade for currency + col if possible, then wait a turn or two to see someone will trade CS to us, and if so, bulb philo to trade for it (and maybe some other techs). If no CS available, well, then I don't really know what to do with him. Settling, I guess.

I'm probably over concerned about the -4 "you've traded with our worst enemy" modifier, but if it's possible to avoid this risk, then why not try and do so?

Final decision is for the player who is up, so if there's no consensus, the playing player should do what he/she feels is best.

Okay, so I made the trade, but with a bit of :smoke:

First, though, I settled Corihuablahblahblah

Traded Compass to Surya for CoL as he already had Philo. As there was no getting CS, I used the GS as an academy in our GLibrary city.

Later, I realized I was supposed to get Currency, and I made this trade with Hatty:
Spoiler :
civ4screenshot0047.jpg

I tried to get CS as I saw a msg that she swapped to Bureau, but she didn’t want anything of ours. Currency upped our gpt by 50% ~ 16gpt to 24gpt at 100% gold L

We hit 1 million at the beginning of my set, and here’s the demo:
Spoiler :
civ4screenshot0044.jpg

You’ll notice we’re fourth in land so far, and as always in civ ~ land=power. So, I propose, in the words of the joker, some aggressive expansion.

Here’s the controversial part. We’re about to have Constr in a turn or three, depending on how the money and beaker situation shakes out. We have elephants. And, we have a neighbor we’re at near-parity with. Sadly, he’s Buddhist, too. BUT, I still think we should attack w/cats and ele’s. The other possibility is hatty. Currently, she has War Chariots roaming about, but nothing stronger. Perhaps no metal?? We have two quechas in her land exploring to see for sure.

I connected the iron too, as well, and put out a couple swords, with a few more in production. I also built a couple chariots just to send them around for some exploring. We could put them on auto-explore in a bit in order to keep up-to-date on the enemy’s land.

Hatty had some war chariots moving what looked like the barb city to our north. It now has 3 archers, but maybe the next player should activate the axe there, and keep an eye on the city if she brings over more. Oh, and the Mayans have Islam, too.

and da save:

edit; i used imageshack b/c for some reason, my imgs keep getting an error msg at bucket. When i tried to bulk download at shack, they, too were denied. so i went with each one individually. tho why there's no IMG/IMG coding to upload the images directly is beyond me.

Eep! Looks like I'm up. :eekdance:

OK back up and running again! :)

I am a bit confused by the comment about no Philo, it looks like most AIs (including Surry and Hatty) still have Philo in the "can research" section of the diplo screen. I'm also don't agree with Construction, I thought we had agreed that CS would be the next tech to give the boost of Civil Service. Even MC would have been better so that we could get some IND forges up (I had hoped to trade for that at some point, but that is looking increasingly unlikely). I also strongly doubt that we will be able to take out Surry with WE.

Hatty is looking Scary, she has waaay more land than I thought.

Some trade points, we should OB with Surry asap for the relations boost. Also we could get 11gpt+clam from Surry for ivory, in 4 turns Pascal is also likely to be willing to renegotiate for more gpt.

Some micro points, there are a couple of tiles that should be working something else, especially egregious are the FP village being used by the new city (It needs renaming, maybe to Coui) instead of Cuzco which has waaay more multipliers, and the pasture being unworked by Olly.

For future turns:
I think Cuzco should build an aqueduct as it will go unhealthy on it's next growth.

I think we should raze the barb city as soon as the opportunity presents itself and replace it with the blue dot to its SE.

I think we've got enough units right now, those hammers could probably go into either infrastructure (eg HE, monasteries, a market for Cuzco) or wealth (or HE in a high hammer city like MP for fail gold ).

Improvements are coming along, but there are still so many unimproved tiles being worked, I think whipping those away or getting some scientists is a better use of our food. but we could do with 2 more workers, we are going to want to start chain irrigating as soon as CS is in.
Tiwa still needs a farm on the green riverside, and I think Olly should focus on farms and mines over cottages as it is earmarked for the HE eventually.

I thought we had agreed to try and trade for Philo for CS with the Mayans. My fault on the confusion.

Realistically, we're not going to win without doing something major. We can't just keep trying to tech and trade our way forward. We're last in points, 4th in land, 7th in GDP and Units, and a whopping 6th for production.

You doing rather okay in that department honestly:)

There i see problem is you tech path. While you for some reason tech construction and compass you basically got yourself out of liberalism race. Way to go tigers!

I agree that we will need to go to war (since diplo has been declared unappetizing) to improve our output, but personally I've always avoided wars as soon a LBs come out unless I have a good UU for the Medieval period. I prefer ( and I think this is the plan) to rush towards cannons and use those combined with either Rifles or Muskets/pikes to take out a civ.

I think that perhaps our problem is also an under-appreciation of the speed with which the Deities are teching.

I feel bad for this, but I'm going to drop out of this game. Playing at Deity level is becoming less fun and more stressful as the game progresses. Sorry.

Off to play Civ 5, Huh? :D

We can get 110:gold: from Shaka for drama.
We could get 100:gold: for drama from Asoka, but since he's Sury's worst enemy I don't think it' a good idea.

We should send the 2 spearmen from curi east as protection from Hatty's war chariots.

It looks like Pacal will try to raze the barb city for us.

We can still finish construction in 1 turn @ 20% research, but I'm not sure if we can trade it for anything.

And a GS will probably pop in 5 turns. We're a little far from education for now. We could keep it for that.

I guess more of us are feeling this way. It certainly is an interesting game, but it might be a bit too tight. I feel like we're trying to win too much, and that's getting in the way of having fun. Also, I don't have a clue on how to proceed, especially with Pacal running away like mad. We could just play turnsets without much thought, and die or lose the game that way, but for me, that doesn't feel right for this game.

I still feel like playing on, but work's too busy now for me to be able to get to the level of thought/planning ahead that is required for this game.

So, I'm fine with putting this game on hold for a while. I probably have more time on my hands between 13-10 and 20-10, and then again from 25-10 on. I hope.

I don't know how the rest of the team feels about how/if/when to proceed with this game. I guess you guys have at least some issues with this game (as do I), as it seems to be dying out now. As I said before, if you're still interested we could continue in about a week or 2, but if you want to stop playing, that's fine too. (I'll probably try to finish it on my own when I can find the time, if that's the case)

So, share your thoughts and see if we can decide on what to do with this game.

OK, I've had a tough week, but now I'm back, (next time I need to drop off the internet, I'll keep everyone up to date:blush:)

I'm also feeling a bit uncertain as to how to go about it. I think we are set up to try building 'phants and catapults to try and take out Surry, but I think that will end up quite poorly for us as
1)he is one of our allies because of religion and civics (ignore him declaring on us, he started plotting that before we got on the OR-Hindu train).
2)I'm not sure getting many more cities will end up helping us out that much as the maintenance will start to kill us and the AIs still get insane bonuses that will only get bigger as the ages go by.
3) I seriously doubt that we can get up enough units to declare before he gets to LBs. We'll have to do some serious thinking about how best to get out some stables for the 5xp elephants, and build catapults to whittle down the stacks and squeeze out some units to defend the cities (those will probably have to be archers).

Having said that, I'm pretty sure we have little chance of pulling off the cannon/musket war I was hoping for against Egypt.
1) I'm worried we have been a bit too unfocused on our techs, going for construction over Civil Service, and not getting Philo or MC.
2) Egypt is waaaay bigger that I had originally thought.

So the only other vc I'm seeing as an option is UN, I think it is possible if we build it and farm every tile and found Sid's Sushi, but not if Pascal gets there first, and with him moving fast there is a decent chance that he will just build it because he can.

I see two possible courses we can take:
1) Try for a war with Surry and see how bad a situation that gets us (I expect it will end up with us being defeated). This puts our current techs to use.
2) Try for the UN. This probably means we will have to go on an absolute beeline, Civil, Paper, Edu, PP, (try to trade for MC, Machinery and Optics), Astro, Sci Meth, Physics, etc. We'll also want to settle some more cities on the coast to help boost our commerce. I'm thinking that taking this route we'll be very defensive, so we'll probably end up with one city as the HE pumping cats for stack damage, Archers for city defense and horses for counter attacks.

Anyways, we really need to choose a path and then stick to it. I'm tempted to try the elephant route just to see how bad it will get!:crazyeye:

Once we've decided on that I'll play a set, then I'm thinking that maybe we should change to a "first come first served" roster where the first person (besides the one who just played) to post a "got it" and PPP will play the set. This makes things a bit more flexible when we are all busy.

I want to keep playing. I prefer a slow pace (haven't got too much free time).

I know we've made big mistakes, but that was kinda expected in this game...

Anyway, even for UN - do we have an actual chance of winning with this? Maybe we want to combine it with some warring to get the 'mutual struggle'. Don't know if we have the resources for both, though...

Anyways, we really need to choose a path and then stick to it. I'm tempted to try the elephant route just to see how bad it will get!:crazyeye:

I agree. I'm also tempted but I think our only (semi-)real chance is the UN. So I vote for that.

Is pholkhero still in?

Actually I was thinking last night (something is a bit strange when you think about civ games as you go to sleep:lol:) that we could probably get away with declaring on Hatty if she doesn't have LBs yet, and we don't care about her in the diplo race so maybe that would let us get away with both?

My hope would be to get another civ to declare as well, then try to get a few cities before we run out of steam.

I'm for war with hatty soon, but we definietly need more spears for that (we can upgrade a few quechas in addition to training), and of course catapults.

OK, sounds like we've got consensus on what to do, unfortunately I don't have time right now to do a strong indepth analysis. The soonest I can take an hour to look at it is Friday.
