Miscrosoft Lists XQ SP2 Problems

Home users that have their preferences set to receive operating-system updates as they are made available by Microsoft may be surprised to learn that some of the software they already run on their systems could be disabled by SP2 or may run very differently

Many of the programs on Microsoft's list of problems will affect enterprise users for the most part. However, a big group of computer games, including a range of those made by Atari, are affected. In addition, the update can interfere with the operation of several popular antivirus programs -- including those made by McAfee and Symantec

Well I guess I won't be downloading this SP. For such a large successfull corporation I wish they could make software that has hacker proof. I'm glad I read this before I wasted my bandwidth downloading it. Did Firixas and Atari make Civ3 or did Atari just publish it?

Well of course. It's a Microsoft product - of course it will have problems.

I'm still on SP0 :p

Plenty of people seem to have downloaded it and run the update without any problems...

Thats why i am sticking to ''old'' technology, window 98 second edition.

I recently had to up-date my half-life game to steam ( a new muiltiplayer interface). Everything went perfect, exept a little bug with french version which was easily patch.

I subscribe to steam forum just for general information, guess what ? Several complainer were crying, yelling, spaming, about the new steam system. Most of them were on modern software like win XP, or even worst win 2000 pro, :crazyeye: win 2000 pro for gaming.

And not the last, Win XP is now the target for virus maker, win 98 is now safe.

Most of what "breaks" is really just a result of the firewall being enabled by default, so you need to open holes for your specific app/game. Or you can disable the FW, and most everything will work as before. If you have a hardware FW in place, you can (probably) safely do this, even though it is a good idea to have both a hardware and a software firewall in place, along with antivirus software with current signature updates.

I have not heard of any "real" problems with this service pack, and most everyone is recommending using it asap. The large enterprises who need to test, qualify, and burn their new corporate images before upgrading will wait, but they always wait for a number of reasons which don't apply to home users.

I've never had any major problems with either Win2k or WinXP. I cannot say the same thing about the atrocity that is Win98. I to Win2k ASAP and never looked back.

As for SP2, I've installed it on both of my machines and it runs like a charm, not problems so far. Now if only I had a Athlon 64 to take advantage of the Buffer Overflow protection.

They're too busy making it idiot-proof. Seriously though, if you think that any software can truly be hacker-proof without the use of severe hardware firewall methods, you are gravely mistaken.

100% hacker proof is essentially impossible. A hacker that was skilled and determined enough could break through any kind of defense. Even if someone said they had a firewall that was hacker proof, thats just incentive for hackers to try.

I highly doubt I'll be getting SP2. Stupid XP firewall. It's evil. I mean, why would you want the XP firewall when you can get ZoneAlarm?

(And yes I realise there is more to SP2 than the firewall part. :p)

My brother installed SP2 on one of our computers, and now when I try to run Conquests on it, it restarts the computer... Almost certainly related. He also didn't do a backup beforehand :(

EDIT: It seems to go just after the splash screen disappears - maybe something to do with the intro, I'll try switching it off

EDIT2: Doesn't work :(

Try a system restore to just before you installed sp2, see if that works. If it does, you can be quite certain it's all sp2's fault. ;)

According to Microsoft all you'll have to do is disable the XP Firewall and it will be fine.

At least that's what GameSpot tells me.

I haven't even gotten SP2 yet. Is it available for download with windows update yet?

If you have Windows Update set to automatic, it became available a few hours ago; at least, that is when I got the popup notice that SP2 was ready to download.

I haven't opted to download it yet; according to the popup, it is between 75-266 MB.

Automatic Update just poped up a few minutes ago with SP2.

I'll errr. try - but I don't see why a firewall would make my PC restart as soon as I run Conquests.

Having uninstalled SP2 it now works. I just got a reply from my tech support email saying I should update my drivers and reinstall directx...

EDIT: Tried both options, nothing changed

I now have SP2. Not only does Conquests work, but Black & White works properly, and can be launched from the start menu (before it minimized when launched from autorun, and lanching from the start menu caused the computer to crash).
