The Middle East 2006 version 2.0

I figured that creating a new thread would be the best way to alert people that the scenario actually works now.:D :D :D

My attempt was to create a Scenario simulating the current situation in the Middle East (and Central Asia, Northeast Africa and Southwest Europe) as realistically as possible.

The scenario begins in January 2006 and lasts for 60 3-month turns.

Most of the naval units are the same as they are in the normal game. The US is now the only country that can build Carriers and AEGISes.

There are also several "king" units: Ambassador Khalilzad and General Casey for the US, Amadinejad for Iran, Olmert for Israel, al-Zarqawi and bin-Laden for Al Qaeda and Al Qaeda in Iraq (both barbarians) etc.

They are not kings in terms of gameplay (i.e. If you kill Khalilzad and Casey, the Americans are not wiped out), but instead, they have large construction costs, and thus, killing them gets you a large number of victory points.

Improvements and wonders
Most of the improvements that come standard have been given a cost of 0 (I didn't want the added tedium of adding a library and a temple to every city).

New wonders:

Coalition of the Willing (see above)

Hamas (see above)

Al Qaeda (see above)

Fall of Saddam (Baghdad)
produces happiness in all Iraqi cities

Trial of Saddam (requires Fall of Saddam in same city)
produces happiness in all Iraqi cities

Sunni Triangle (Baghdad) and Kurdish Nationalism (Mosul)
produces unhappiness in all Iraqi cities, obsolete with Universal Sufferage

WMD Program (Tehran)
Allows nukes, generates nukes

Youth for Democracy (Tehran)
produces unhappiness in all Iranian cities, obsolete with Republic

Cent Com (Doha)
Anything military that you can think of

Burj Dubai (can only be built in Dubai after Globalization is researched)
Generates a lot of money for the UAE.

Aswan High Dam (Aswan)
same as Hoover Dam

The Great Pyramids (Giza)
only a tourist attraction here

I called wealth FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) instead; it now requires the Globalization tech.

Credit where credit is due

The map was made by Yodapower, and several of the unit graphics come from El Justo's Coldwar Deluxe Scenario, Luddi VII's Vietnam War, and GRM7584's Middle East 1950-1990 Simulation. I can't remember where I got the GWB face on the Diplomacy screen. If anyone recognizes it, let me know.

Also, due to the controversial nature of this scenario's subject matter, I'd like to clear up a few things:

Terrorists (an invisible, hidden-nationality unit) in Iraq are controlled by Iran and Syria. Allegations that these two states are, or have in the past, supported the insurgency in Iraq have been made, but, as far as I know, have not been proven. I do believe that this is likely, but even if this is not the case it serves a useful purpose in gameplay: The US troops in Iraq will kill the Syrian and Iranian-controlled insurgents (or vice-versa) and cause the Iranians and the US to hate each other. It also gives the Iranians and Syrians opportunity to get control of the VP locations in Iraq.

Some capitals had to be moved, simpy because they are not on the map (e.g., Kandahar as the Afghan capital, Karachi as the Pakistani capital).

There is a ficticious desert island in the middle of the Med. with an American airfield and several units on it. This is to represent the US troops stationed in Europe and in the US itself, and they are there just in case the US goes to war with Libya.

If you have any suggestions, please let me know. Here are some that have already been made.

Version 2.1 is ready now. The airfield problem is fixed now. Other changes include tech icons; they're now different for each track. A few new buildings include:

Human Rights (Great Wonder) requires Death Penalty Abolition and EU gov't.
Generates happiness in all cities.

Free Press (Great Wonder) requires Political Reform.
Happiness in all cities.

Minority Protections (Great Wonder) requires Social Reform.
8 happiness in the city that builds it.

Parliament (small wonder) requires the Universal Sufferage and Republic gov't. Makes money, decreases war weariness.

CAP (small wonder) requires EU gov't and wheat.
Makes money.

Membership Treaty (small wonder) requires EU Candidacy.
Makes money.

Orthodox Church (same as Church, Mosque or Synagogue) for former Soviet states.

Military Tribunal (improvement) only built by America.
Decreases War weariness and resists propaganda.

West Bank Unrest (Great Wonder in Jerusalem)
Produces unhappiness in Jerusalem. Obsolete with West Bank Withdrawal.

Security Fence (Great Wonder) Requires West Bank Withdrawal.
Generates happiness and doubles city defenses.

Courts can now only be built by former Soviet states (outside of the EU) that have researched Independent Judiciary.

Secular Courts can now be built by Islamic countries that have researched religious freedom. They function the same way as courts do.

New Unit:

T-80
18/9/2
Ukraine, Russia, Pakistan

The link for the updated files should are here.

There have been some problems with this. If you have already downloaded files from the above link in this thread, THERE IS NO NEED TO DOWNLOAD AGAIN.

Just download the zip below and replace the text files from the 3D download with those from the zip. Also place the tech chooser folder in the art folder.

There have been some problems with the GI art file; the new file is here. Just replace the GI in the Art/Units folder.

Yeah, I was thinking about making all the techs of one flavor the same Icon -- keeping the Advanced Flight Icon for America, making the Islamic techs the Star and Crescent from the Middle Ages Conquest, etc.

Fall of the Soviet Union should be one of the last 20th century ones and European Idenity happend along time ago. I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE SECOND KOREAN WAR (your scenarion and RL in a way).

Yeah, I know. I just needed some base tech for every flavor, so that they couldn't start up another tech tree. Maybe "European Unity" for the European track and "Putin's Russia" for the former Soviet states?

I should have the Second Korean War up by Wednesday. It'll only be a preliminary version, like the Cuban Civil War. I'm working on making it more like this one with special unit animations and a tech tree, though.

YELSTIN'S RUSSIA CAME BEFORE PUTIN! PUTIN IS BAD NEWS I'M AFRAID.
*
Also I would put "Modern Death Penelty" insted of "Death Penalty" since the DP is probably the oldest form of punishment. I'm working on my scenario and I will be done soon.

aahhhh this scenario is sexy mmmmm

oh and to answer the problem with airfields on foreign soil,to which William GTBW also inquired on the TCW thread, I believe they will stay on the map if only you have a unit there at the start. So i woudl put a helo or a marine or something on the airfield in the biq so when the map loads it wouldnt just read it and delete it. Im not sure if thisll work, but it does in my frame of mind.

I had them full of units. El Justo's suggestion (via pm) made me think that they disappeared because only Americans had the technology to build airbases, but the Iraqis and Afghans didn't. I switched the tech requirements, but I haven't tested it to see if it will work yet.

And William GTBW, the entire tech name is "Death Penalty Abolition." The tech box is just too short.

Sounds like an interesting scenario csa945, downloading now. I'll leave some feedback after I start playing it......Good work :goodjob:

hi csa945,
just downloaded you scenario.

Scenarios\Middle East 2006\text\Pedialcons.txt":TECH_EU
select mission type

i use the 2.1 patch too.
hope you can help. thanks

I created that tech and as you can tell it works in the game from his screenshots; I guess you didn't put it in the right folder root.

Did you make sure to put the folder entitled "tech chooser" into the "art" folder from the 3D download and to use the text folder in the zip in place of the text folder from the 3D download? It'll ask if you want to replace the latter; click 'yes'.
