Modern civilizations bet

Everyone is Norman! It’s so fun and inclusive.
Ben Franklin's a Norman. Charlemagne's a Norman. Amina of Zazzau is a Norman. Nous sommes touts Normands.

I think with the full wonder list visible through the tech and civics trees, it now seems very safe to say that the final two spots will be distributed among Britain, Germany, and Russia. No Ottoman, Iranian, etc. wonder seen anywhere.
Has the University of Oxford been seen in the Modern Age?

I was hoping this would be in Exploration.

The UI is so bad at this stage.

I would love to help with graphic design to make all of this more legible, and I volunteer my free services. “Academics” looks a red circus tent wearing a fringed hat. “Military Science” looks like a helmet sitting atop an apple next to a friendly feather…

A little disappointed that they insist on putting Oxford University in Modern. I think they want a big European scientific icon to represent European scientific advances of the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, but I'm pretty sure there are plenty of other options for that. Oxford University should definitely be Exploration, which is its correct time period.

Russians will almost certainly come from Mongols and possibly from Normans (suggesting, alas, a very militaristic take on Russia); if Germans are present they prrrrrobably come from Normans.
But then Normans in base game seems to have just two auto unlocks, and one is French Empire. The other is likely America, but if not then only one of Britain or Germany would probably fit in there.

Albeit as new dlcs add more european civs... Norman will probably become the Exploration age Rome with lots of paths from it.

To me it seems a bit odd to have a civ's unique wonder at the start of a tech tree, no? If the point of each civ's own civic tree is to research their wonder sooner in addition a production boost, having the wonder available through one of the era's first techs doesn't make much sense.

Not sure if this is the case in any other eras, hard to make out the icons on my phone, but this may point to no Britain at launch, and Mughal's wonder being Taj Mahal.

Good point. Now I'm curious about the wonders of the other eras. And since they're choosing the most iconic and famous wonder of each civ to be their associated wonder, it makes sense that the Taj Mahal would be the associated wonder of the Mughals, which is certainly more famous than the Red Fort. And the British wonder would probably be Big Ben instead of Oxford University.

Having both neutral wonders early feels like it defeats the point of New Deal a bit. You need to get to the end of the Democracy civics tree to pick up that 30% bonus towards wonders. I mean, what's left by that point. The neutrals will be gone. The wonders associated with any chosen civ will be gone. After all, you not only need New Deal to get that production bonus but also unlock those wonders themselves. I guess in a large game with 8 players that means you have two associated but not picked wonders left on which to actually use the bonus. Maybe three if your own associated one unlocks late (e.g. SoL).

In the Stream, Xerxes went into Mughals and Ashoka went unexpectedly into Siam (whether by preference or because Xerxes took Mughals is less clear).
It would make sense that Ashoka's second preference would probably at least be the Southeast Asian civs. I feel like with Xerxes going to the Mughals, it seems less likely that the Ottomans are in the base game. I'm not sure who else Xerxes would default to?

It doesn’t have to be default, if Xerxes was Mongols, then Mughal could be an option (as well as Qing for ones we know, and Russia/Ottoman for ones we don’t)…
If Xerxes prefers Mughal… or they set it up so that he randomly chose Mughal on that playthrough.. then Ottomans could be in
