The small town of Traum was just the right size and in just the right location. It was just large enough to be a significant presence, a dot on the map, so to speak, but just small enough that it was merely a small nuisance when it acted up. Furthermore, it held some valuable resources – a few diamonds, some metals – but it wasn’t in a particularly strategic location.
This was all to its benefit, because Traum – or the Kingdom of Traum, the name which its citizens preferred – caused no end of troubles. It was a country unto itself, with a monarch, although no nobles and no parliament. Situated firmly between Bannor, Hippus, and Balseraph holdings, the town played all sides against each other in a delicate triangle, vexing both government officials and general populace alike. Traum’s citizens were, of course, amused by the entire affair. The last escapade had resulted in the seizure of a neighboring farm and reparations to boot.
Still, nobody could have been too surprised when King LightFang’s body was found dead on the throne. Six extraneous holes had opened up in his body and had inconveniently let all his blood out. There was no note, no asking for ransom or an explanation of the state of affairs, but everybody knew. Somebody, somewhere, was not going to forgive the loss of a farm. While women, children, and even men fled, eighteen stayed behind as the gods had commanded. They solemnly gathered in the courtyard in front of the palace. They all knew what they had to do...
